This have been a long time in coming - and now Vista's product activation is causing headaches for Microsoft.

Especially as people use a key generator to generate valid keys, thus blocking some poor unisuspecting bugger from activating his/her Vista.

Or capturing a key via cellphone camera then using said key...

This is nothing new - with the launch of Windows XP in 2001, the key generators (to generate keys for XP Home, Pro, Corporate & Office) were already available on the internet.

The generated XP keys only worked till the next Service Pack release, but now that Microsoft is using the Geniune Advantage validation tool, it might only last a few days or weeks...

It's much better & safer to have a geniune key... :)

Apparently that brute force keygen turned out to be a hoax...

I take librarian hates vista,as you are always posting about it

Microsoft bashing, my dear fellow, is a favourite pastime of mine...

...having had a lot of horrible experiences with their k*k operating systems, I do love in poking and prodding the Beast of Redmond with whatever I can get my hands on... :D :D :D

Still using XP.
No reason for me to "upgrade".

A chap I know that builds PC's and is in the business claims there is still lots of bugs and will not run Vista.

Yes, it is, but what do you do if somebody manage to snaffle your key and it lands on the blacklist?

Chance of that are like one in a billion. Anyhow if they do, just call
MS and get a new key. Vista sucks for valid reasons, ie its slower,
more bloated and full of DRM, the feature you refer to is
an XP feature.

vista sucks

all i can say is "ms vista sucks"

stay with xp sp2 for a while - at least the next 12 months

or, move to linux... why is it that maybe 60% of pc uers dont migrate to linux

ask yourself a question: WHAT DO I DO ON MY PC? 99% of your answers will be YES to linux

GO LINUX!!!!

allround ms sucks, its really time for me to go 4 a mac or my dream is a linux certified notebook - goto have audio/video editing and have a decent image editing suite.

its all ready available for me - in a MAC...

will a linux laptop cum?

i can only dream

go linux

i want, rather need to know, why do pc users want/need vista?

answer my questions:
1) what do you use a pc for?
2 is windows needed for what you need to do?

99% of pc users can migrate to linux its got 150% of what the average user needs

There's only one reason that one needs to use MS operating systems, and that's if you're an avid gamer.

Of course now they want to force you to upgrade to vista with Dx10. But with all that DRM floating around in the OS they can go to hell. I'd rather stop playing games first.

stop talkin kuk

go and buy a genuine windows, its only the pirates that are having trouble with windows validation

windows is kuk operating system, that might be up for most stupid comment of 07

i think you should stop pirating windows and either go for a mac or run linux, linux is free no need worry about using dodgy keys and then moaning because they dont work

I'D be pissed if my key was stolen by a keygen, however the isue with drm is troubling cause what will the future hold for computers if microsoft limits your use thereof.

they will phase out windows xp very fast now

within 12 months xp wont be available to buy, only windows vista

Very true - I'm still waiting for XP SP3, but it looks like Microsoft won't be releasing it... :(

xp is a thing of the past thats for sure

we might as well get used to vista because its going to become the standard very soon

once all the old laptop and desktop stock is sold you will have to pay extra for windows xp instead of vista

The reasons I use Windows instead of Linux:

1) I installed Suse Linx 10.2, first boot the computer freezes. Second boot I get to actually log in and then the PC restarts as soon as I see the desktop. I try to completely reinstall, same results. Move to my second PC this time instead of a log in screen I get a garbled mess at which point the PC is also frozen, Oh well, must be Suse Linux then Right? Move on to the next distro:

2) I move to Fedora Core. My AMD XP1800+ which ran Windows like a dream seems sluggish and unresponsive so I turn of all unneeded services and install all the manufacturer specific "Optimized drivers" (aka nVidia drivers and such) with absolutely 0% performance increase. I also tried other tweaks and things, everything apart from a Kernel re-compile. I only installed required packages. Apart from this I had a entire SERIES of problems where programs crash with absolutely NO error messages(BEFORE and AFTER the modifications, I tried several reinstalls of the Distro, always the same results). Once the program crashes you don't even have a clue as to why (because most don't have error messages), I tried to debug the problem but could only solve some of them.

3) I move to Ubuntu, which is by FAR the most stable release. It impressively installs as quick as Windows (which the other distro's couldn't muster, they took freakishly long for basic installs) and it works on first boot (WOWIE!). I didn't need to install a single driver! But it's still more sluggish than a Windows XP setup (far more sluggish) and when I try to play my first movie in Totem. It just crashes with a error to which I can find no fixes on the Internet. Oh well install MPlayer, seems it can't play all of the files, some of my older mpeg files just crash the player once again with no error message (The files played on WMP and MPC in Windows). I later found out the reason Totem crashes every single time I try to start it is because it REQUIRES a soundcard, I have no idea how to make it not require one!

4) I install Windows and apart from Driver installs I need do NOTHING more for me to be able to do everything I want to do. No meddling with Bash, no hacking hacking hacking, it just works.

Once Linux is actually stable(as in I can install it on any of my PC on which Windows works and it'll work 100% without me needing to modify or hack something) I'll start using it, to me it just seems very unreliable as a desktop system.

The only reason I actually use linux is because the degree I study requires that I use Gnu C++ (which I don't much like either) but I must admit Valgrind is quite a excellent utility and I'd definitely use it to test all my C++ code.

There certainly must be a reason most people use Windows instead of Linux even though it costs money?
