Known Issues
VBScript Installation Issues with VMC 9.x on Windows XP and Vista
What is the fault?
When uninstalling some Windows programs, they seem to unregister a DLL which is part of the visual basic runtime environment of Windows XP or Vista. This affects the installation of VMC, as VMC depends on these system components. This is a known Windows issue which is called 'reference count problem'.
Windows Vista seems to be more affected than XP
What does the user experience?
A user tries to install VMC 9.x. At the end of the installation, it starts to roll back (uninstalls itself). There is no error message shown.
If the installation is logged, the following error is shown in the log:
'Error 2738: Could not access VBScript runtime for custom action'
Which software & devices are affected?
VMC 9.x. The device does not matter, as the problem occurs earlier.
Resolution status
To solve this issue the following steps must be done:
1.) Check whether the file vbscript.dll exists in the %SystemRoot%\system32\ directory.
2.) Check whether this OLE component is registered correctly.
If not, the user MUST register the vbscript.dll using regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\vbscript.dll.
- open a command prompt
- type "regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\vbscript.dll" (without the "")
If the vbscript.dll is not available, it has to be copied from the operating system install CD/DVD.
