The User Account Control (UAC) in Vista is a big problem with a lot of driver installations. Turn of UAC before installing any driver. In fact turn it off full stop. If you are paranoid you can always turn it back on.

To turn it off START > CONTROL PANEL > USERS ACCOUNTS > Turn User Account Control On or Off.

Turn it off, reboot and then install your drivers.

While UAC is a good introduction from Microsoft to prevent spyware etc from automatically loading on your pc it does more bad than good with getting drivers and certain software working and can turn a lot of people off Vista before they have even begun. With UAC turned off you will not have problems with any installation.

Please be aware that although switching of UAC is an option, it does still lock down the temp directory among other things, which certain installers require to write to during the installation process. We have just spent considerable time with MS reviewing UAC an have not yet seen a scenario where it negatively interfered with driver installations. The scenario's where it did interfere was with installers that were not Vista compatible.

Since turning off UAC I have not had any problems with any driver or software installation. This includes Vista & Non-Vista compliant installers. I have even loaded software of mine that is 3 years old and they all installed like a charm. BUT ... thats just my experience ... I know not everyone is experiencing the same thing when it comes to Vista :) As far as the Huawei software and drivers goes the UAC "definitely" causes part of the problem, the other issue is incorrect PCMCIA drivers. I have 3 other users on Vista I have helped with installing their Huawei software and in each case UAC was the problem. BUT thats just these cases :D
 
Quickbooks on Vista.

I noticed a post somewhere earlier regarding a user who was not able to run Quickbooks on Vista. Quickbooks does run on Vista. To make it work right click on your shortcut to the program and select the tab that says "compatibility" Select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" as the compatibility mode and voila !!!! Hope this helps some out there. I know this if OFF TOPIC but frankly my dear ... I don't give a damn :)
 
The Vodashop/care in Green Point normally has a person there from Vodacom that just handles phone and data setups.
 
I've been chatting to salmo on PM and it transpires that his system (an HP) was upgraded to Vista.

I wonder if this might not warrant a BIOS / driver upgrade to fully support Vista (if possible), so I'm bringing the topic back on-line so you clever people can help :)

Salmo, can you post the exact model number of your HP laptop. Can you also check the BIOS version? It probably shows on the screen during the POST.

Hi v3g,

I downloaded and installed the VMC 9.1 installers from the vodacom site, and ran the install. Then followed that with devsetup.exe as instructed. But nothing happens when i run devsetup.exe and the mobile connect software still doesn't find my device! :(

I see there is a firmware upgrade to the e220 that will let vista see the iso structure on the device, would this help solve this issue, or have a missed something?
 
For the next few months any Vista installation is going to be at 'early adopter' level.

I spent about 3 hours yesterday trying to get the E220 working on my brother in law's new HP laptop from Incredible Connection that came preloaded with Vista. He is by no means an early adopter and since the OS is being preloaded onto machines from big retailers I hardly think the above statement is fair. RC users are early adopters. There are non-tech-savvy customers that are going out and spending money on new equipment, expecting their existing hardware to work with it, and they certainly wouldn't even know to come as far as mybroadband.co.za or even huawei.com.

Anyway, fair or not, I have yet to get the modem working. I have not yet tried the VMC9.1 on the vodacom site, when I had a look on the site yesterday there was no software listed for the E220. The search I did on these forums turned up the MTN thread, and I tried all the suggestions on that thread first (even going so far as installing the MTN software, which didn't detect the device so that was pretty pointless). The last thin I tried was installing the 'normal' firmware from Huawei from an XP machine, and trying to install the E220 after that, but the drivers still do not get detected correctly. Can anyone confirm for me that if I download the 9.1 VMC RC3 from the Vodacom website (http://www.vodacom.co.za/services/3g/downloads.jsp) that it will work for the E220? What version of the E220 firmware do I then need (I have gone through about 4 different firmware downloads at this stage, and none of them worked..).

9.1 does support the E220 on Vista.

We also have a VMC-Lite (E220-only) version for Vista. Still in RC but if you PM me an e-mail, I'll have it mailed to you.

Hi Flint, I was also having issues with this, the VMC 9.1 just wouldn't install the drivers for the e220 and wouldn't detect the device. I also noticed that vodafone has what appears to be a release version of VMC 9.1 (not RC3 as on the vodcom website), this is obtainable from: http://www.business.vodafone.com/site/bus/public/enuk/p_vista.jsp

Subsequant to installing this and having no luck in getting it to recognise my e220 device, i found an older post on how someone managed to get this working under vista before all the updates were available, following the steps in this post i managed to get my e220 installed under vista, and while it doesn't seem to be the perfect solution yet, it does seem to work quite satisfactorily. I hope this helps, this was the only way i managed to get it working. Hope it can help you out too...

Thanks Chad, I got the new 'lite' version from vodacom3g, so I will try that first and if it doesn't work out I'll go through the steps that worked for you. I'm just trying to determine which firmware version is required for that lite build ;)

They (different firmware versions) should all work.

Did you actually get the mail with the file? Mine came through as 3K in size...:mad:
 
Merlin U740 Driver For Vista

Hi guys could anyone be of assistance? I have a Merlin U740 HSDPA card tryin to install it on Vista Buisness but not picking up the drivers at all. Using a Sony Vaio Laptop VGN-TX56GN/W. Please help cos its rather urgent.

Hi there ChadB, Flint et all.

The E220 doesn't work with Vista on an HP machine, believe me I've tried it all and continue to receive an account each month from Vodacom even though I can't use the service. Currently I'm using an old 3G phone as a modem and connecting via Bluetooth when traveling. If anybody does find a solution I'd be hugely grateful to hear about it.
 
Well vodacom3g sent me the latest and greatest vodacom goodies to try and get it running, but I haven't had access to the machine yet to try it. I am still trying to get an answer on which version of the firmware is appropriate for the latest control panel anywhere, so installing it may just turn out to be a waste of time ;)
