Vista under fire

It is not Windows ME, but there are problems. The OS is not as efficient as it should be with some serious hardware hogging when minor effects are enabled. They are nice, but as this writer said, Ubuntu also has nice eye candy. Ubuntu however won't always detect GPUs correctly with other hardware detections issues. When it works, however, Ubuntu works beautifully!

Lets see what SP1 does for Vista.

Not a fan of Vista. Will stick to XP for years to come most likely.

*Note: Use OSx most of the time though, so not a strong voice in MS world.

Vista kills gaming

Read this before attempting to install Vista, game developers are refusing to write games for Vista at the moment because of the compatability issues Vista faces. I installed Vista when it just came out, hoping it will solve my Dual core issue which i'm having with XP. It seemed to fix it but when I installed my games, it gave me endless nightmares. Some games wouldn't install at all, and those who did were so slow and lagging. I was forced to go back to XP, all games work fine. Until Vista brings out a service pack or improves on the gaming side of things I will happily stick to XP.

Vista is also expensive, why would companies pay so much to upgrade when XP does a job fine for employees?

Works 1/2 the time for me..

64Bit drivers are as buggy as heck! ..

It's true, Vista is under fire.

yes Vista does have problems, but most of them are due to lazy 3rd parties

popular software companies have "refused" to support Vista for their recent product versions. Also, hardware manufacturers have been bashing out terrible Vista drivers for their hardware (yes you Creative), or simply not at all.

yes Vista uses more resources. may I remind you that 98 could run fine on 128mb of ram. then XP came out that needed a massive 512mb to run ok and 1GB to run optimally. so the increase required by Vista is compatible if a little bit less.

Another thing. The gap between XP and win98 was only 3 years (98 to 2001). XP to Vista is a massive 6 year gap (2001-2007).

I believe Vista's main problem is that people are content and comfortable with XP. for the past 6 years, nobody had to learn something new, and everything worked without significant effort. it also does not help that the competing OS's are poor or only available on a mac. before you linux activists start flaming me, let me be clear:
1. linux is not user friendly enough
2. hardware support is poor (mainly because most manufacturers don't care about linux)

don't believe me, look at desktop OS market penetration.

Linux should be simpler to use and setup (I never ever want to edit a text file, EVER). When I can download a simple exe or rpm installer for any device that I can buy, then it will be comparible to Windows XP

Mac OS, should be available to run on non-mac hardware to truly compete with windows. Mac owners insist that Mac OS is the fastest OS available. of course it is, Look how expensive the hardware is!.

Vista has the same problem as OSX and Linux. it's requires too much change from the user, provides too few significant advantages over windows XP and only works with and on certain hardware.

I run Vista on all 3 my PC's now. 99% of the hardware now works (compared to 70% when it came out). about 80% of my software works. the remaining 20%, I have found alternatives that work fine. I cannot live without the integrated search, I cannot live without the excellent performance in my hardware (core2 2.4ghz, 4GB ram, 1.3TB of hard drives). windows XP could never give me the extra performance. there are a few things that still irritate me, but I'm not going back to XP.

My final advice.
If you get a new PC now, get Vista with it.
make sure you have got 2GB of ram and a dual core processor.
Check your hardware manufacturer's website that they do have drivers, or let you local IT support check it for you.
Check that, for the software you use, the developer has bothered to notice Vista

if you have done the above, go for it.

And your source for this, Breaking news is?

By the way, welcome to MyADSL!

You would think that given they had a longer time to get Vista right it would be far better

Nope, because the 3rd parties only really started developing proper drivers and software patches after it came out.

Really, so what about those 5-10 DX10 games coming out soon that developers have been writing for Vista long before it's release?

I haven't had problems with my games, they ran fine, theres a lot of benchmarks etc to prove this on the net, so rather read those before a post on MyADSL.

my COD2 runs ok, the game developers just neglected to make FSAA work, turn it off and patch to newest version.

I got myself a new pc last week with vista.

I must say after spending nearly half my cap on drivers I am happy. My games run fine and everything else seems to working fine EXCEPT that HP does not have drivers for my laser printer.

Just make sure you have a good PC to run it and you wont have any problems :)

Ja, too bad, you can just enable it in the Nvidia control panel though (or ATI equivalent) but other than that it works in Vista.

I installed mine yesterday for the first time, what problem are you having fishfly?

Good post Sapphiron, summed it all up quite nicely.

I run Vista on all 3 my PC's now. windows XP could never give me the extra performance. there are a few things that still irritate me, but I'm not going back to XP.

Just curious, why couldn't XP give you the extra performance?
I'm just glad I got Business Vista (because Business Vista and Ultimate Vista are the only Vista versions that include a XP Pro license), I used Vista for a few days, realised that 30% of the software I use weren't compatible (yet), couldn't find Vista drivers for printers etc. so I decided to downgrade to XP Pro. I like Vista (the search is nice!) but I'm quite happy with XP too so I'll simply wait until the 3rd parties have come to the party before I upgrade to Vista again.

T3ROR also mentioned having dual core issues with XP. What issues T3ROR?
I have Core 2 Duo and since I'm running XP at the moment, how do I determine whether my CPU's are running optimally? Or is it just a matter of Vista being designed to make better use of the Core 2 duo technology.
