Vista under fire

Depends what you want to use it for, but with any OS there is a learning curve and an abandonment of one's previous comfort zone is advisable.

Prior to Linux my comfort zones were mostly OS/2 3 & 4, NT4, and Windoze 2000, I survived the transition to Linux.

I honestly don't know what all the fuss is about. Vista works perfectly fine on my laptop o.O
 
It appears from casual observation that Vista offers very little new to the casual consumer.

1. Aero - Only works on expensive version, with expensive Hardware - I disable the eyecandy anyway.
2. Search, Microsoft has been instructed to stop disabling 3rd party search programs.
3. Upgraded security - 3rd party apps for XP
4. Games support - my games work fine in win98.
5. IE7 - (puking noises)

6. Since there's always a learning curve in a new OS, I'd rather devote that to Ubuntu

I've heard this complaint before, except it was about linux :). Damn those hardware manufacturers for the fact that it can take hours to transfer files across a network.

Yeah, six years for what? Aero and pretend security? The problem with Vista is that there is not enough of a difference for six years' work.

Have you tried to get a new PC without Vista? So what if I'm in the market for a midrange laptop (<R10 000)? Is Vista not for me?

I stopped using OS/2 because of the floppy disk shuffle at the beginning... but is now happily using OpenSuSE 10.2... :)

If I were to buy a laptop, I'd make sure it's OpenSuSE (or Linux) compatible, then wipe out whatever windoze there is on it, install Linux, and when I want to sell it, I reload Windows...

The only reason hardware support is poor is because of lazy hardware creators not having their drivers ready on time on some still don't have it ready :mad::mad:

I have just bought a laptop. For the moment its still Vista'd, but the Vista is on notice. I would love nothing more than to run kubuntu on there, but then I'd have to make a plan for one or two apps for which there is not a suitable linux equivalent.

After reading all the complaints about Vista not having drivers I want all the M$ lovers to get at the back of the line because the Uber c00l l1nux haxors have allready been waiting for a while...

I really want to know what is the process to get drives signed by Microsoft and how much does it cost.

For the guys searching for a decent Notebook without a OS I would recommend you have a look at http://www.mecerpc.co.za because their price is decent and you don't have to pay for windows. Just be warned I don't know how well the notebooks support linux, I'm actually still wondering if I should buy a Mecer.

Sadly, I will admit that I did upgrade. I went from XP to Ubuntu and bought a Wii. Life could not be better now, gaming is fun again, and spyware is a distant memory.

Well pointed out on this thread, that really makes any sense to me is:

- Better support for Dual Core 2 then XP.
- Better search then XP(I personally have troubles with the Vista search)
- Better parental/user control then XP.

But I do think you can find similar or better functionality in other OS's.

You can't be serious. Do you know how much it costs to develop drivers for a new OS? And quickly, just release a new version supporting Vista. Do you have any idea whats involved? Please don't comment if you don't know. Try writing a shell namespace integration and quickly make it work with Vista. The OS has bugs in some of the API's that make it extremely difficult to just "convert".

Do you know what that is? Because everything is subject to change in a Beta. You could spend weeks of time fixing things that have changed between the Beta and a release. Would you rather spend money on 98% of clients who have XP or spend all of your time on the 2% that have Vista? You have to fit the development time in somewhere and you can't stop your normal work to do it.

Your numbers are a bit off, true that the Vista base is small (5-10% probably), but People tend to buy software when they buy a new PC, not that often halfway in between. About 50% of the PC sold today are sold with Vista (give or take a 10%).

it sounds stupid to me that a software developer or hardware manufacturer would not put the extra effort in to make their stuff work on Vista.

There was a 4 month period in the beginning of the year where I could not sell HP printers, scanners and multifunction to my clients, because HP neglected to bring out Vista drivers. During that time Canon and Kyocera had working drivers for all their printers (new and old), even before Vista was released. they had drivers available for the beta versions too. I was a long time supporter of HP products, but due to their recent performance (or lack thereof), I switched my client to Canon and Kyocera products. Why could they do it and HP not???

rest assured, one day vista will be fun, but for now, i cant wait for MS to patch XP to support dx 10. did anybody read the link i posted? demmit!!!!
