Vista/Windows 7 issues with copying files to a server

I hope this is the right forum to post this thread...

We have been trying to copy files from a notebook loaded with Vista to a network running Windows 2003 Server.

The error we keep getting is 0x80070057: The parameter is incorrect

We tried copying an .iso (Windows DVD Image) across when the problem first showed up, and later it resurfaced when trying to copy a .par (SolidEdge Parasolid Model) file.

We tried the files from a machine running Windows 7, and the same error propped up.

When doing these copy operations from an XP machine, it goes through OK with no problems.

So, is this our networking hardware that is incompatible with both Vista & 7, or is it something else that someone here might have experienced before.

Our server is a HP DL380 with a Procurve 4208vl switch.

Can anyone help please?

i have been trying out win 7 and ubuntu 9.10 and i have to say GATES' system is still as messed up as ever , have decided to can win 7 and stick with my beloved UBUNTU will give you the same advice forget about win 7 it is unstable as vista ....linux rules from now on ...:D:):D:D:D:D
 
You need to upgrade to windows server 2008...
Gotta Love Microsoft :p

Firstly the driver I tried to replace with was older than the one installed and I tried to overwrtie it with the older that worked 100% with 7 this gave me a BSOD and this driver is WHQL certified for Vista, I could have tried this with Microsoft drivers and I'd still get a BSOD I'm sure.

Secondly compared to my linux experience, I can mess with certain drivers (ie. souncard like I tried with 7) and it won't bring down the entire OS, I can even uninstall AND reinstall the official nvidia drivers without rebooting.

But not for Win 7.

As I said, because your sound card manufacturer wrote some bad code, it's Microsoft's fault?

BTW nvidia was one of the biggest causes of Vista crashes in its early days ...

The fact of the matter is that 7 (ie. vista reloaded) is not solid, if a 3rd party driver that only affects a soundcard can destroy the whole OS and create a BSOD loop.. time to face the facts that it's a ripoff.

I've had bad drivers for OSX forced and it would not crash the OS only present me with a dialog asking to reboot because of system failure but only once I've only used the device associated with the driver.

I bow to your obviously better knowledge. How many drivers have you written?

None, but anyway to each his own. I'll stick with Linux... saved me from Vista and now it's younger brother 7.

Freedom of choice is a good thing and I'm glad there are alternatives to Windows.

Freedom of choice is fine, I've absolutely no problem with that. That you like Linux is also good and I'm sure you could make many posts extolling its virtues, which I am sure would be appreciated by many. Even non Linux users. Who knows, you may even convert an Apple fanboi or two :D

Bad mouthing a product because one has seen others do it on the web isn't acceptable.

I gave 7 a shot, impressed turned to shock and disappointment now I have a certificate to bash it all I want. :D

Check your antivirus isn't causing the problem.

Thanks Drake for the relevant post mate! :D

I have actually tried it before the IT guys realised that my notebook never had any virus protection installed. So first try was without any antivirus and the second try with Symantec Endpoint installed. Same error message.

Any other potential causes?
 
Also something that seems to cause a number of issues with Vista is UAC - make sure you have administrator rights to both the folder/file that is being copied and then also maybe try turning UAC off before the copy, just to see if it works or not...

As for the discussion regarding win7 vs linux - each to their own guys, but for all concerned, just remember win7 was until recently, still in beta stage. Even now, it isn't even a RTM version... go figure that there may be issues with it - that's the purpoe of a beta... ;)

LOL lets not get them started on that again..

What about Antivirus on the server itself ?
 
I had this exact same similar problem the other day that was almost the same ;) Tried to copy a file from a UNC name and it failed; tried from a mapped drive and worked?? Turns out the path was too long, causing the file copy to fail....

Off topic, but related to the above: Why do people think that if they hide porn in "\\username$\new folder\new folder\new folder\new folder\new folder\new folder\new folder\new folder\My porn pics" admins will never find it???

Thanks Wishblade, but I have UAC switched off. Was actually the first thing I did when I installed Vista X64 on the machine some time ago.

What else?

Sounds like the Server 2003 might be an issue. Well, our IT manager is already making plans to roll out Windows 7 on all new machines purchased from the day it is available as an option on new PC's. So I guess he has some other issues pertaining to server OS's to resolve before jumping in, I'll talk to him tomorrow.:rolleyes:
