VLC, 8600GT resets when playing HD.

Hi,

I have a 3.2GHz Core 2 Duo, 3GB RAM and 512meg Nvidia 8600GT.

Thing is it has started resetting when I play HD content, usually about an hour or more into the video.

Any suggestions?

What do you mean by resetting?

whole pc resets.
Movie freezes for a few seconds then the pc resets.

Running XPsp3.

Do you see a blue screen, or a flash of a blue screen before it resets? I assume you mean the pc reboots? Have you tried leaving your case open while watching?

No blue screen, movie freezes (with sound freezing), screen goes blank, post.

Opened the case, checked (felt) GPU and CPU heatsink directly after reset (both cool, and yes, all fans are working).

Even tried pointing a desktop fan at the open case.

Plays games, sd movies etc for hours on end without issues.

have you tried looking at your windows logs to see if any errors are logged? I am not 100% clued up with these things so I am only suggesting what I would have done. Have you tried new Nvidia drivers?

latest Nvidia drivers and nothing in the event logs...

going to try underclocking the gpu and see if that makes a difference.

Ever since I installed the latest nVidia drivers my 8600GT starts flashing the screen connected to my HDMI port whenever I'm an hour or so into a game. I haven't played any MKV files on VLC to see if it does the same yet.

No resets though, just freeze flashing for a few seconds then back to normal.

Card was bought in 2007 and runs on Win7 64bit.

I'm tempted to roll back to previous drivers. I've had the problem before where latest nVidia drivers weren't very kosher.

Yep, new ain't necessarily better. I'd suggest the OP goes back to a previous version.

I'll hunt around my downloads for an older version.

Also trying a newer version of vlc.

I had the same issue with VLC simply rebooting the machine (Nvidia Geforce 9800GT).
I switched to Media Player Classic (K-Lite Codec Pack) = no issues so far.

Ended up reloading the pc and now all works fine.

Something buggy I guess, buddies were using it for laning before the kak started.

I get the same (PC simply resetting) on both Nvidia 8600GT and 9800GT - on 2 machines, core2duo & quad core. XP and 7.
Now using K-Lite Codec Pack (with media player classic) and no problems.

I think it's something with the new gpu decoding features since 1.10 but thus far it is working perfectly (watched about 14 hours of stuff since the reload).
