BTW, let me start off by saying that my connection over the past few months has been impressive - no more dropping connections and good speeds so well done Vodacom. Only issue is that it drops 3G fairly often and switches to GPRS, but this usually resolves itself within a minute - can become annoying but I am assuming this is a signal problem on my side.

Back to the issue at hand: I am having issues with VMC in Vista. If I switch to sleep mode in Vista whilst VMC is still conected, when I switch back on VMC cannot find my device - the data card. I resolve this by either closing VMC through the task manager or having to restart my laptop. This is starting to really bug me now for obvious reasons and wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this or brought it to Vodacom's attention?

Your problem is vista :D

Downgrade back to XP and wait for Vista to improve....btw a lot of new laptops don't ship with XP support I see. No files or anything on the websites etc. So if you install XP you are kind of stuck with limited functionality.

Don't dispair because many of the chipsets used in the new models may have also been used in the older models that were still shipping with XP. So if you take a day off and do some scratching you can find the drivers for XP and have yourself a working XP install.

This worked for me with the HP Pavillion (one of the first ones to ship with Vista only) a few months ago, not sure if manufacturers have gone and used chipsets that don't have XP support in their peripherals now. Its worth a try.

When you phone tech support like I did they will tell you its impossible. They always say that. By not providing XP support in the form of XP drivers for peripherals on new laptops, we are all being forced to adopt Vista whether we like it or not. That is why the tech support told me it will be impossible to get XP running properly.

Just be sure to clone your drive before you wipe Vista ( in case you need to roll back to Vista and don't have the install CD). And if you do manage to get XP working, ghost that as well to save yourself the hassle in the future....

I like Vista to tell you the truth. I havent had any difficulties apart from this one and once you get used to it, it is easier to use than XP was. And VMC is the only application that seems to freeze when I come out of sleep mode. I am no techie, so maybe this is a Vista issue, but to me it seems isolated to VMC software so I assuming its a bug in VMC that needs fixing? My understanding (which is a limited one in comparison to many on this forum) is that the VMC drivers talk to the data card. So when the drivers dont pick up the data card when I come out of sleep mode, it indicates a problem with the drivers - and it seems its only the VMC drivers that dont "switch on" again. This tells me that Vista is operating fine (because sound, display, networking etc drivers all operate without issue thereafter).

What happens if you kill VMC before going into sleep mode?

There are known problems with Vista not coming properly out of hibernation. Many complaints everywhere, not just on data modems.

I saw Microsoft released a patch to address some of it about 2 weeks ago and a friend of mine reckons it helped his Vista laptop a lot with the hibernation problems he had.

So, check to see if you've loaded these patches (was ~160M on my system).

If this does not help try and shut VMC down completely before going into sleep mode. BTW, do you, or rather your system, need to go into sleep mode?

I was an early adopter of Vista but it's been pretty painful (and expensive) so far....

Originally upgraded my (fast enough) P4-based, XP system to Vista and it slowed down so much that I had to buy new hardware, 2.4G Core Duo, 2GB RAM, etc. Spent the wrong side of R10K on it...:mad:

Better but only marginally faster. Can take up to a 60 seconds to open a 'Send new mail' screen....

Just sent someone now to go and pick up a 3GHz, Quad-Core CPU, 4Gb of faster RAM and a kick-ass display card. Another R15K down the drain...:mad::mad:

Was *this* close to ordering a 24" iMAC, but they had no stock.....

Are you talking about the fixes listed here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936003

Oh if that core duo box ain't working for you I'll gladly "dispose" of it for you :D

When its not plugged in I tend to go to sleep mode to avoid rebooting, and when I know I will need to use the latop in say half an hour or so I do the same instead of a shutdown or locking the laptop. Will check out the patch releases but I know my Vista updates regularly on an automated basis. Last one was two days ago with 11 new updates.

@Morkhans - it is a workaround yes thanks, but a painful one waiting for VMC to close and then waiting for it to re-start again when I need it. Guess it will have to do for now.

Thanks for the replies - I guess it is a Vista issue then?

My friend reckons i'm running the light version(my guess is he's just jealous coz he thought i couldnt do it :D )

Probably a Vista / Application issue, so you'll see more or less problems with different apps.

But for Microsoft to admit to a hibernation problem on Vista is pretty much the closest you'll ever get to a confession :)

Which modem are you using? Does it have a non-Vodafone management app?

Just started downloading the latest Vista / Office update....

352.6MB !!!

Just replaced 2Gb of 666MHz of RAM with 4GB of 800MHz and it made a HUGE improvement. Next is a better display card and the the QuadCore CPU....

Nope, its a Vodafone branded data card. Globetrotter 3G+ according to my device manager - not sure if that is the correct name? I replaced my Dell D620 with this cauz I was having major hassles with the internal 3g modem - Vodacom hadnt released software for it and I couldnt get more than GPRS speeds. VC 155 refused to help and referred me to Dell. Dell referred me to VC. Thats when I found this forum. Too late to get help though cauz I had just ordered the new laptop.

Trafeye went through quite an ordeal but eventually got his Dell working.

Sounds like signal level is a problem on the Dells....
