I have never used any VM software before - so completely ignorent on it :o

Heres what i want to know if possible:

I'm running Win7 X64 Ultimate (RTM), and dont have drivers for my Casio LK-93TV keyboard (no 64 bit drivers exist :( ). So can I run 32bit Operating system under VMWare for my Casio? Will it access the USB ports etc like the actual main OS?

Thanx, what VM software would u recomend?

Depends on what you want to do. For playing around with new stuff, go for VirtualBox; its free and very good. Good server virtualisation go for Citrix XenServer, its also free and also very good. For testing/dev go for VMWare workstation; its not free but very good....

Noted all your points ... I am running Win 7 (X64) as said above - this is my primary OS. I want to run either XP or Vista (X86) under VM in order to use my Casio USB piano with fruityloops using the Casio 32bit USB driver. I understand Win7 has a built in VM for XP apps (similar to MS Virtual PC 2007) it is distributed via MS update (already downed it today). Gonna try see if that will work.

Windows 7 + XP Mode = Possible solution for you. AFAIK you install the drivers and FL under the VM for the initial setup and then use FL from your start menu.

Seems to be ok. Still need to load and test a few things.

Quick one, to install Ubuntu in the M$ VM (XP mode unticked) will the VM just boot on the Linux Ubunto.iso for install or is there some tricks? (Am a bit scared to just do it.)

VMWare if you're using USB devices. Passthrough is automagically handled... VirtualBox needs some voodoo I haven't had the patience to figure out yet, and according to colleagues, has stability issues.

Warning - check that your BIOS supports hypervisor mode. Don't assume that you can run Win7 XP mode just because your processor supports it.

Well I got Win7 Virtual PC running and installed Vista. My Mobo handles the virtualization just fine. I even got as far as getting the USB working. Thing is even though I install the driver for the Casio in the Vista Virtual environment, My Fruity loops (also in the Vista Environment) does not pick up any midi devices ?!?

My thinking is that because the Win7 USB driver for my device is not installed (as I have no 64bit driver for it), so when I try pass the USB device through to the Vista VM, it will not work because of that?

USB is not a simple component to pass through. LPT and serial ports are very easy to map; USB devices that work with virtual ports make it even more difficult. Different virtual solutions have different USB configuration options - some may let you connect a USB HDD, but not a USB FDD....

Did you try XP mode?
I have Xp mode running fine. Issues with Ubuntu9.10 no mouse movement cannot get the integration components installed.

Have not tried XP Mode yet (500mb download). Unless it is packaged with 7 Ultimate? Will try various things out tonight, VM Workstation and Virtual Box. No harm in playing around with them, nice learning curve...

Its packed with XPSP3 ready to be used.

Sweet, will I find it under windows components add/remove in control panel?

? ? What you mean. If you install the XP mode download or start Virtual PC when creating a new virtual machine then just tick XP mode. That will install the XPSP3 OS.

I just installed Virtualbox with Ubuntu 9.04 for testing, posting from it :D (Will wait for !0.0 KDE version) Got a few extra grey hairs. Three time the install crashed and gave errors, Win7 would not even force shut-down and SATA CD kept running. After the last reboot all suddenly worked fine?

I was hoping that the XPSP3 OS was bundled in the Win7 DVD... didn't want to waste 500mb of my cap downloading something that might not work! :(
oh well download time again..... iBurst - 10% of cap gone for one download
