15 phones were stolen by a guy temping for one week. Luxury models.

sounds like a scam comming on :p

So blacklist the phones? I assume the shop didn't hesitate to do it? The phones should be useless to whoever stole it.....

...only useless in SA. AFAIK blacklisted phones can be used when taken over the borders.

but isn't that blacklisting tied to the IMEI number on the phone? which can be changed on most phones anyway with downloadable software

Many countries have acknowledged the use of the IMEI in reducing the effect of mobile phone theft, which has increased exponentially over the last few years. For example, in the United Kingdom under the Mobile Telephones (Re-programming) Act, changing the IMEI of a phone, or possessing equipment that can change it, is considered an offence under some circumstances.

But yea changable, theres' also the conspiracy theory that Cellphone companies profit out of stolen phones...every stolen phone = a new subscriber . Makes you wonder ;)

A special task force guy once told me a container of phones went missing a few years ago. They tracked and traced every one of them down to a metre or so. I believe vodafone UK may have a reciprocal agreement with vodacon SA to greylist stolen phones.
