Vodacom 3G HSDPA notebook here

They forgot to mention the latest (and hottest!) Dell laptop feature: Exploding batteries.

Tried to contact Dell regarding these laptops...could not get any assistance. I think their helpdesk/sales department is worse than Telkom and Vodacom combined. Raises some concern as to what kind of service one will receive when the laptop does give problems…

What do you want to know? If you want to buy or get more information on the deal shouldn't Vodacom be contacted or who is actually marketing the deal?
The new Dell Latitude D620 notebook with built-in 3G HSPDA data card linked to Vodacom’s 3G HSDPA network is available through the standard Vodacom retail networks.

Also keep in mind that the Support and Retail / Sales departments are different. They are not the same (not even the same numbers) so comparing not being able to contact them to their tech support is rather a leap, not to mention, inaccurate.

Dell product support is pretty good. They usually collect, fix, and return to you within 3-5 days.

Indeed. Same here.
In fact, I only have NBD and SBD, so if I have a problem they will at the most come the next day and fix, onsite. No problems.

Lappy is approx R3k cheaper over 36 months than buying outright. Interesting........

Not a bad deal, but 36 months is just a bit much. I'd rather pay a bit more but over 24 months. With the speed technology is going, 3 years might just be too long to be stuck into a contract [unable to upgrade to new tech] .

Also have to consider that you are buying into two techs [unable to seperate] with different advancement/improvement lifecycles. The "built-in" tech [HSDPA] ALSO changes much faster than 3 years. So chances are you will either not be using the built-in HSDPA and/or the laptop before the 3 years are up.

Tempting, but...

The last two comments are spot on. "Goedkoop is duur koop". Yes, it costs R3k less to buy the laptop this way NOW, but you are 99% sure to be sorry no more than 1yr or so down the line when technology has changed, broadband prices have come down and Intel has released their "Trio" chipset :-)

How much will 1gig cost you in 2 years time? Sign the contract now and you will pay R700/gig untill end of Sept 2009.

er. Its my experience that if the prices drop, then the prices drop. By signing the contract, you are basically saying that you will pay for a GB of data for the next 36 months regardless of what a GB costs. But I agree with you about the technology. Just thought the pricing is a little pear shaped.

With what graphics chipset does it come ? The Nvidia or imbedded Intel ?

regards

Gerrit
I believe their offer is with Intel embedded gfx and 'low res' screen 1280 x 800. Not sure if they will offer the nVidia NVS110 (business version of 7400Go) with 1440 x 900 screen that I have in mine.

Have just receive my Dell Latitude D620, the embedded network card not working, not detected by Windows XP pro, now Vodacom is jumping ship and want's me to take it up with Dell. The machine was defect since day 1 and it was taken to 2 different Vodacom outlets and they could not do anything to fix it, but gave me Dell's phone number for customer care, guess what after being on the phone for more than an hour with somebody in the UK they confirmed my suspicion. so after having this machine for 6 days I can still not experience the great wonder of wireless internet and everybody is just pulling up there shoulders. I'm stuck with faulty machine

No way! . If you signed up with Vodacom then surely they are responsible for sorting this out as you signed up for the whole package (or am I just being naive?) Read the small print.
