Vodacom 3G HSDPA notebook here

v3g: Why is the Lappy R13k if you pay cash but over 36 month contract its about R8k. Is it because you are tying yourself into a 36 month data contract so VC is assured of money for the next 1 1/2 years and so making lappy cheaper. I would buy it cash if it was R249 x 36.
 
As i've said in another thread, this isn't a bad deal NOW. But you have to consider the following [considering you are signing a 3 year contract]:

1. What will 500MB/1GB cost you in 2008-2009
2. What broadband tech will be prevalent in 2008-2009 [Wimax/cheaper forms of ADSL etc]
3. What laptop will be required to run things like Vista in 2008-2009 .

I would consider a 24 month contract, but 36 is pushing it a bit in all 3 areas mentioned above. Just look what happened in the last 2 years in all 3 points mentioned. Laptops didn't change as much, but we didn't see a new OS in the last 3 years either.

I think the D620s are too new to be affected ... my D620 (not from Vodacom) does not have a battery manufactured by Sony.

Otherwise the integrated HSDPA daugtherboard module (Novatel Expedite EU740) works very well. Since the antenna is large (integrated into the screen) , in-door reception is great. Much better than stick-on one supplied with PCMCIA card.

Run Vista RC1 perfectly on mine ... 1.66 MHz Duo, 1GB RAM, nVidia NVS110 gfx, HSDPA included with latest Novatel drivers.

Does the notebook have a connection to connect an external antenna if need be? Like the standard data cards do?

No, but as I've said the integrated antenna in the laptop's screen lid provides very good indoor performance, so I wouldn't think an external would be neccessay.

Dont think so, firmware & drivers look to be standard Novatel, however I haven't tried. Also my Dell 5505 HSDPA module does not come from Vodacom, however I would doubt theirs would be different.
 
Video Adapter

Any idea what video adapter is included?

Is it the Intel GMA or the Nvidia NVS110?
 
one of the guys here at the office has a new Dell 820. While installing the drivers (after a recent win crash) it picked up a built in HSDPA modem card as well. I checked it on the internet as well.
BUT.... only for use with the Orange network in Europe, so this new one is probably just open for use with VC.
