Vodacom billing shock from Google Play Store

I don't buy your employees story. If he/she has a kid under 12 I think you'd find the culprit of these purchases pretty easily.

OP is Vodacom able to give you the purchase history?

BTW if your employee plays candy crush they might done the purchasing themselves
That may be so, but do you think it is reasonable that vodacom makes it possible on a business account. that means that anyone of 12 employees with phones could do the same. And I'm responsible.

It's a lot of money and if his Google account was hacked then not really his fault. I can't understand how I was opted into this and why there are no limits or OTPs or passwords.

If any of my accounts get hacked be that personal/work it is my fault. As such I keep my accounts WAAAY separate. It is not 100% up to the service provider or the infamous IT to secure accounts 24/7.

I also know should my domain account be hacked I will be held liable for all damages.

My point is that by allowing carrier billing on any contract cell phone, Vodacom is exposing subscribers to risk beyond their control. I would have to cancel all my vodacom contracts in order protect myself from having a recurrence of this.

And this is why you give your employees a cellphone allowance each month, let them take out their own contract, you just give them the cash or include it in their Cost to Company.

This way you don't have to deal with this nonsense, and they'll certainly be more careful due to the fact that the contract is in their name, and not the company's.

I get good deals because I have a business contract. They would not get the same. My drivers would probably not qualify for contracts. Vodacom should patch the security hole.

Do you not have a spend limit in place? This also has to be done via the Google Play store, so the phone has to have been stolen basically. Also note how it's supposed to show up on carrier account within 15 minutes.
That much cash on Google Play is probably a kid playing candy crush or something.

What you should do, OP, is to link all these phones together under a Google Family account..

As these are company phones, create a Google account for each phone and this is the account used to sign in on for each phone.. These accounts you then add as child accounts to your Google account, from where you can control play store purchases and payment methods.. You can even set a payment method they are allowed to use if the need for this arises and require any purchase to be verified by yourself..

His account wasn't "hacked"...we all know that. His kid was given the phone to play with and you got nailed by Ingame Purchases.

No kid involved, employee realized unlimited contract and boss pays, why would carrier billing be excluded?
OP gave employee full access to account and is therefore solely responsible for the mobile account as per their pre-existing conditions of employment.

Same thing in essence. Vodacom and Google not at fault here.

Why do staff phones have Google Accounts on them in the first place?
IF they HAVE to have Google accounts, the first thing you do is setup a your payment options to ALWAYS ask for a password etc.

PS. I'm on Vodacom contract and just went to my Playstore. There is no Carrier Billing option available for a Payment Method.

Either way the employee is liable, if Vodacom reimburses the OP. They'll be going after the Employee for the cash.

If the employee was hacked which is not likely he/she needs to contact Google or the app devs and beg them for a refund.

The OP is the employer....

Why would the employee be liable once the employer has been reimbursed?

Yes I know the OP is the employer.

Essentially Google/the app devs have already been paid. Vodacom may pay back the OP because it's essentially a flaw in their system, if this is the case they'll want their money back and the person liable for it is the employee

I wonder though if carriers can reverse charges the same way credit card companies can.

Don't think there are any flaws here.. Carrier billing is something that you must opt-in to.. It doesn't happen by default.. This is at least my experience, when I enabled carrier billing for purchases..

Where? In Playstore? I do not have that option at all.
