We've been using vodacom for business/personal use for about 5 years now without any real problems, if you overlook the obvious pricing issues. But about 5 months ago we started having, what i know now to be what vodacom call "throughput issues".

Basically our connection stops working except sometime on the gprs only setting on the router for long periods of time. The problem has gotten worse over the last month or two, to the point that we never have a 3g connection at all during the day and only sometimes at night.

I have logged calls with vodacom on 4 seperate occasions, all of which have been escalated to the networking guys; I have had my router, at vodacoms request, sent in for testing and bought a new modem all of which hasn't helped.

I am currently using a B970 with a high gain poynting antenna on the roof, which is reporting between -55 and -65db singal strength, which it reports is very good, we always used to get great speeds.

The lastest call logged has apparently prompted the vodacom guys to run a "trial" in our area which involves installing some device to test the towers throughput at various times of day, which is great but apparently takes up to a month before vodacom themselves get the results and a further "month or two" to decide and do what needs doing to sort out the problem.

My question is, is this a valid reason to cancel my contract? Would vodacom accept it?

I simply can't be without a proper internet connection for months?

Any help would be appreciated

Hi Rustic

A cancelation will only be done if Vodacom has exausted all avenues and there is really nothing that can be done to improve the signal at all. You can send me your number and i will check the history of your communication with Vodacom.

I've had another on site visit from vodacom and the technician says that the device is faulty again, only had it back from the first repair for about two weeks.

So i've booked it in for repairs at vodacom Menlyn, thanks for the replies.

Vodacom data, I'll forward my nuimber to you via pm, but hopefully this sorts out the problem, he said that the 3g hardware in the router was faulty. number to follow

Rustic, I hope you are sorted out after the repair. If not, and reliability is what you are after, forget about 3g. Get ADSL.

Hi Barnette,

I'd love to get adsl but unfortunately the area i live in suffers from cable theft, to the point that telkom no longer replaces it. So i'm stuck with Wireless i'm afraid.

in my area there are cables. So i could change to adsl earlier this year.

In my instance i also had more down time than proper service. In the end i finally got this answer:
there are to many users in that area resulting in the tower(s) not coping. There is a tower in planning.

So i asked what does planning mean for me & when would the tower be up. (thought for a moment) -said: planning is not constructing a tower nor is it likely to solve my problems in the next year to 18months.
The person said: that is right.

The person was babbeling on but I just said bye & killed the call.

As there are no cables in your area, what are the chances of over demand, under supply?

I would imagine that there is a fairly good chance that the tower is over utilized. The networking guys seemed to think so the couple of times i spoke to them. normally call drops etc are also pretty high.

i'll have to wait and see what data the trial comes up with.

I live on the outskirts of pretoria, its not heavily populated but as you say, there are no telkom cables around so i assume everyone is on wireless, all the businesses and people i know in the area are.

Not sure how many people a tower can handle at one time without giving these sorts of problems, but it certainly seems that it is over worked.

Oh dear. I do wonder who these criminals are that are sabotaging Telkom's infrastructure... one can only imagine...
