I have a friend that got a contract from vodacom and asked for a phone that can whatsapp email and has a qwerty keyboard, when he got home and opened the box he found out that the phone doesn't have wireless.

What is the options he has to return the phone?
As far as i understand he was never told that the phone doesn't have wireless.

Do you really expect the counter jockeys to know all these details? I would be inclined to go back straight away and advise them of this phone's shortcomings

Next time do a bit of homework. Google is your friend (or your friend's friend)

Did he ask if the phone had wireless ?

Caveat emptor !

It is wireless it connects to the cell phone network.. no wires.

I really want to know which phone do they offer on contract these days that doesn't even support wifi (I'm guessing that's what OP means) or whatsapp. Two years contract is no joke, best to do research before signing in future.

The Asha range is a budget range, meaning low end. Nokia / Microsoft won't be making them much longer.

Read the contract he signed, I think there is a cancellation clause in there somewhere.

If he didnt ask the consultant for any specific features or needs, then Vodacom or any network or retailer is not liable for that. The consultants generally and lets face it, are only there to sell to the consumer, and give them what the consumer asked them for. If the buyer asked for Wifi and whether it can do whatsapp, and the consultant said yes it does, then its a different matter all together.

From reading your post, he asked for email, whatsapp and a qwerty keyboard, but didnt mention Wifi.

so its best for him to go back to Vodacom, and indicate that the handset doesnt meet his requirements, and its not what he asked for. Normally the customer win in these situations anyway, as the conversation wasnt recorded etc

What does being able to whatsapp and email have to do with wifi?

You don't need wifi to do those things. 3G works fine.

I wouldn't think that you would be able to return an item unless the quality of the product is bad, the phone is dangerous or the phone doesn't work. I know that Makro have an exchange policy where you can exchange items if they are not suitable for you but this is store/retailer dependant.

Long story short, the phone is working fine so I don't think Vodacom has any requirement to refund/exchange the phone.

These days in the store they make you sign a requirements form. You sign it and basically state that he phone you selected meets your requirements and you are happy with the selection. It indemnifies the store and Vodacom from you coming back and saying you dont like the phone.

Did you sign one of these?
