Hi. Does Vodacom support EDGE on their network/towers?
 
Short answers is 'sometimes' :)

There is a parallel GPRS+ / EDGE rollout happening at the moment but obviously with not the same kind of focus and intensity we're putting into the 3G network, where we believe the future of data lies.

Some regions are further in their roll-out than others, especially the Cape where a large % of cells are EDGE (and the so-called GPRS+) enabled.

I'll see if I can get a GPRS+ / EDGE map, but it's probably pushing it a bit.

PM me with your location and I'll check up if you have EDGE in that area.
 
Do the 3G cards support EDGE? What sort of throughput should they theoretically handle?
 
Edge Phones with 3G

If I have an Edge enabled phone such as the Sony Ericsson P900, will I be able to utilise the faster Edge connection over GPRS with a Vodafone 3G package?

If the phone supports EDGE, you will be able to access the EDGE speeds in EDGE coverage areas even when on the 3G package.
The 3G package at reduced rates allows access to GPRS,EDGE and 3G and the HSDPA package at the old rates allows access to the same + HSDPA.

If im incorrect, pls correct me V3g

i think the reduced rates only apply to 3g/gprs, whilst hsdpa/edge are charged at the 'normal' rates

Ic, which specific post addresses this issue? I can't find it. Last time I checked there was still confusion - do we get charged reduced rates for EDGE or not?
 
Another one of those "it depends" answers....

I see the whole new tariff structure in a very simplistic way:

You buy a maximum speed capability.

If you have a HSDPA card (or phone), you pay the higher tariffs, irrespective of your actual connection type at any point in time, be it GPRS, EDGE, 3G or HSDPA.

If you have a 3G device (card or phone), you pay the lower tariffs, irrespective of your actual connection type at any point in time, be it GPRS, EDGE or 3G.

If you have a GPRS or EDGE device, you pay the lower tariff.

V3g, forgive me, but I don't want to see your interpretation of the tariffs. Are you stating facts?
 
3G Edge and gprs are all billed the same ie R2 a Mb
HSDPA is billed differently...

Edge is just a faster version of gprs, very effective and on a good day can stream live feed!

What happens if you have a HSDPA card and your change your bolt-on bundle to a GPRS bundle - do you pay the lower rate? Will the network limit me to 3G or will you be billed out of bundle?

SonyEricsson P900 does not have EDGE

Speed capping independant of device type will be working soon.
