Vodacom exceeds million broadband subscribers

There'd be even more if mobile prices were any where nearly competitive - as it stands mobile is only ever good for browsing.

With the exorbatant pricing they charge for bandiwidth i cant imagine how much money this must rake in a month, also, its not right they they are called broadband customers with the coverage that most people get not being near to the full promised speeds.

Do you work for Vodacom? Why are you giving them free advertising.

Wake up and smell the feaces.

This whole site is one big advertisement, though.

Are these the 20meg customers or the 50meg customers?

Even if it is small bundle customers, still a big wad of dosh when x 1 000 000

Why register here then? :)

Its bound to have more,MTN does not sell prepaid modems and their data billing system is either under billing or over billing...so there is only one mobile broadband provider with a stable system and customer care agents that know what they are talking about

Test case:

1 million x R 289.00(1GB data bundle, no contract ) per gb per user per month...

per month = R 289 million...
per annum = R 3,468 billion...

I wonder what % of that is pure profit... they haven't adjusted there pricing yet, but I'm sure they are already benefiting from lower bulk data costs via SEACOM(and I'm sure Telkom has dropped there bulk data costs to compete with SEACOM)... no benefit to us the end users!

We South African are Vodacom's little piggy banks! Those figures exclude any out of bundle rates... at R2 per MB (no contract)...

These figures are shocking when you consider you can get ADSL data for as little as R20/GB and it's getting cheaper all the time... if only Telkom would drop there ridiculous ADSL line rental fees!

BGE

Surely when you consider how many SIM cards are out there this is kind of a pathetic number?

Note the topic says
Vodacom exceeds million broadband subscribers

That means internet users...Not callers. :)

Considering the number of telephones at home, the adsl usage mark is a bit of a pathetic number as well?

Yes I had realised that. Perhaps I didn't express myself properly which led you to misinterpret what I was saying.

Here is a more specific interpretation of the point I was trying to get across:

Why are we running articles about surpassing 1000 000 subscribers as though it is some sort of achievement? IMO all it highlights is how few South Africans are currently in possession of SIM cards and can actually afford to use the internet through their cellphones at the current prices.

I get what you mean I apologize. :)

You're right with you statement, I agree. The ratio you mention displays how unaffordable it really is to the average consumer.

I'm pretty sure on my SAOL uncapped I download more a month than 1 000 of these VC 'broadband' users.

Growing .. riding the cheaper bandwidth wave yet they cannot give us lower prices. Hmmm?

Anyone know if VC plan new 3G installations? It seems only the big metros gets served...

No need to apologise I obviously didn't express myself well enough and your response was entirely civil. I can see how my original post was open to misinterpretation. It was entirely my fault. At least I got there in the end though :p

Your response did raise a point about ADSL subscribers that I had not considered either up until now.
