Hello guys. I have a customer who is getting a Iphone 14 from the USA in the next week or so and he wants to to switch from his physical sim to the Phones esim. My understanding is that Vodacom supports esim on wearables, but not on phones officially, though I havef read on mybb that some of you guys got it working on Iphones. Please can you tell me how you activated the phones esim? I have never had to help a customer with a esim.

I got the QR code from Vodacom and scanned it on the phone. It worked but I never got sms's so after a day or two I went back to the Vodacom shop and set it up on the watch instead, the way it should have been, with a nano sim in the phone.

Oh dear. So SMS does not work with esim on phones with Vodacom? Any other problems you guys have experienced that I need to warn my customer about guys?

I remember it being a bit precarious all round so I wouldn't suggest it as your primary sim and Vodacom certainly don't encourage it. I do also remember a few people on here who had tried it also so hopefully some more feedback coming.

If SMS does not work, then you cant activate iMessage either I presume?

You cannot receive normal phone calls on the E-Sim, data works thats about it.

Also had to go back to the store and get a nano sim and disable the E-Sim sadly.

E-sim in my iPhone working fine, went into a Vodashop to have it activated, got the QR code via email, scanned it with my phone.

It is a data contract/line so using the monthly data on it, but I am receiving SMS messages sent to that number.

I also receive calls on that number, even though it’s a data line some telemarketers must have gotten hold of that number so they try to call but I just block them.

Hi, please share more on how/where you got this eSim activated. I went to a vodashop yesterday to try and get an eSim on a contract data sim. The consultants said NO. Emphatically NO. can't be done. Impossible.

Dude told me it's not available on Vodacom yet.

I have a esim in my iPhone 13 and works perfectly fine. Calls, SMS and data. I have not been able to activate imessage or facetime on my physical sim or esim

Went to vodacom store, got a QR code via email and scanned it

To be clear, Vodacom has a OneNumber service which provides you with an eSim on your open contract (at a monthly fee). The intent is to load the eSim on your wearable device and share your current data/minutes.
Is this the eSim you perhaps have?

I went to my local Vodashop (Paarl Mall). Your contract must be an open contract though (meaning, not a Top Up contract)

The reason why many Vodashops/consultants will say no, is because it is supposedly only available for wearables (Apple or Samsung watches, etc). The consultant who assisted me, did not want to assist at first, said I can just open the Watch app on my phone and follow the instructions from there, etc. (Which is fine and doable if you do want to use it on your watch, but I wanted the esim on my phone).

I just spun him a story and said I didn’t have the Watch yet, and want to be prepared for when I get it, and insisted that he process the OneNumber service on my data line. He was hesitant and did not think it would work, but did it anyway, and the system processed it just fine.

Few hours later I received the email with the QR code, scanned it with my phone and everything was working properly.

I think it is appalling that Vodacom does not formally offer eSim for phones in 2022, but with the workaround as described, it does work. Not sure if a “normal” voice line would also work in this way, but I cannot see why not.

...
Thanks bluepoole. And to confirm, you activated OneNumber on your data contract, which is exactly what I want to do. I have both a normal Red Core "voice" contract and a data contract, I should ask them to activate it on the 'alternative' data contract phone number?

No problem man. Yes, it was activated on my data contract. They must activate it on the data line’s number yes, if you don’t know it they should be able to pick it up from your ID number. You can also find it on the MyVodacom app.

You can have esim on iwatch paired with iPhone 14 or on iPhone as the primary number; only on androids can you scan the code - on iPhone, Vodacom needs a few days to activate. A problem is esim on iwatch - do nor show ID - calling form iwatch show unknown call?

You can try Telkom, I have had an E-sim on Iphone from them for more than Year now.
