Vodacom launches HSUPA

@rpm, won't you please check the press release you got and maybe amend the posting that the UPA service is actually ALREADY available to all 3.6 subscribers.

The 1st of June date was a mistake on my side (busy nursing a few broken fingers :o). It became available last night to all HSDPA-3.6 users.

I take it the marketing guys were not impressed with your error :D.
 
I take it HSUPA is only for people who have the correct modem? Or a cell capable of connecting via HSUPA? :confused:

All towers are UPA capable but you'll need a modem or handset with the correct radio capabilities, such as the E272.

You would have noticed, over the last few weeks, I've been trying to convince everyone in the market for a new modem to make sure it's UPA-capable.

Now you know why ;)

A data packet consists of a certain number of bits. This packet is clocked out one device (say a data card) into the next device (say the base station) at the speed in bits/second of the underlying medium.

So a packet of a known size will take a specific time to be clocked across the link. Increase the link speed and the time to clock it across the link (link latency) will decrease by the proportional amount.

So, higher speeds equate lower latency ON THAT LINK.

The total network you see is made of a number of these links and their individual latencies add up to give the round-trip latency.

So, upping the speed, on one link (UPA, in this case) will improve the round-trip latency, but by what measure is a factor of the number of links in the path and how much delay each contributes.

So basically you are saying if the max upload speed of a link is say for example 20k/bytes a second and the application demands say 25k/bytes a second then latency is affected because of the loss/failure to keep up?

However in this sense most games don't need a super high upload speed anyway and they are more than covered. So by my understanding this won't improve latency unless said uplink is required to be more than the line is capable of.

Am I right?

I don't think so. You didn't have to register for 3.6/7.2Mbps HSDPA, you just needed a suitable device... and of course a suitable tower. :rolleyes:

PS: I saw assigned profile on MTN tower yesterday: 8192kbps downlink, 8192kbps uplink. Unfortunately I was testing with a 1.8Mbps only device (Huawei E620).
