Bought a Vodacom MicroSIM at the Vodashop in Sandton City today.

For my iPad 64GB 3G :D

Normal SIM to the left.

The assistant said that he has sold quite a few already. Charged me R105 for it.

I got ripped R129 from Vodashop 3G in Cavendish, only to be told when I got home that you can't do SIM Swaps with the Microsims and that they are only available to Contract Customers. WTF???? I just got sick and tired of waiting on 155 for help to plead my case, so I just switched my iPad to MTN. Better coverage, better throughput where I live. And MTN actually knew what I was talking about... Dont know whats up with Vodacom lately. They seem to have really dropped the ball!

EDIT : BTW, anyone hoping to do this now in anticipation for the iPhone 4 - the normal sim cut out that you see in the picture is NOT the same size as a normal SIM, and its not perforated. You will need to hack it with a knife or something to get the plastic the right size, and the tolerance at the edge to the snap points is minute and easy to screw up... Rather buy it and keep it an a draw till you need it. My brother just told me he got a MicroSim at Cellucity Cavendish today for R65. A bit more reasonable but they also only SIM swap on contracts.

This is not true. Please note the points below from a memo that was sent to us regarding the micro sims.

1. The retail price to clients is R105.00
2. You can use it on prepaid. You merely buy the normal prepaid starter pack, have it RICA'd, activate it, then you buy a MicroSim from the store, and request them to do a sim swop with the micro sim on the prepaid number.

I tried again this morning. No go. They said to me they can only SIM swap if its a contract. Having a closer look at the packaging, once you have opened the blue envelope it is clearly written on the top that it is post paid only... Pity they don't put that on the outside of the envelope!

We received a memo stipulating that we can do a sim swop on prepaid with the micro sims.

Hey guys

Got my iPhone 4 recently and just got my MicroSIM from VodaShop in Fourways today. Cost me R79 even though they said R105 on the phone.!! :p Took about 15 mins to SIM-Swap, and it was activated within about 2hours.

And you can do a prepaid SIM Swap as that's what i just did.

Micro SIMs on Prepaid

Micro SIMs are definitely available on pre-paid. If you don't come right with the network, get from a managed prepaid provider like Flickswitch.

Alternatively, you can just shave down a normal prepaid/contract SIM down to microSIM size, I found a tutorial on the net and did it. Also did it with a 64k SIM which have the 'big' chip on it. Not though that you risk damaging the SIM if you aren't careful, took me 10min so I think that it was with it as it saved me R100 and time. It works 100%
