Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

Yep problems in the EC region as well. I tried calling the 155 number but it couldnt connect. Spoke to a consultant at about 10pm to confirm that there were connection issues since 6pm. She responded that no one called before 6 - I had to explain that the reason why they received no calls was because the number was dead!

Ok, my software issues have been sorted. Now to see if the same problems than earlier(3G Disconnecting), show their faces.

3G was quite stable later on today(12th). With 4 bars on 3G my speed was about 150kbps. What is the average? Not that fast I would say. V3G what is the chance that you could get someone to “accidentally” knock an antennae or two on some towers to point more towards Gordons Bay to get some more HSDPA reception here? ;) ;)

You should normally get better speeds than that, especially with 4 bars of reception, hard to generalise though.

I still need to tweak my modem location a bit. Maybe then I will get 5 bars, and better speeds. 150kbps is not even proper edge! But as you say, hard to generalise as there is too many things affecting the speed. Signal, location, interference, area topography, computer/user mood, internet saturation etc etc

Eish - lost all network at lunch and now i am getting the following as a ping

Run a speed test on http://speed.vodacom.co.za and see what you get. I get close to max 3G non-HSDPA speeds with a vanilla 3G card with 2 bars of signal.

Download Speed: 210 kbps (26.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 15 kbps (1.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

this is what i get in pe on vc speed test. 3g card.
not good

Just did Vodacom test and get:
582kbps down
357kbps up
4 bar signal
E220 (running Huawei Mobile Connect):D

Your speeds are more typical of EDGE in good weather...
Keep in mind that both GPRS and EDGE are affected by voice traffic.

Vodafone Huawei E220 Modem
Running VMC Lite

Test 1
4 Bar 3G signal. Same position as always.
Download Speed: 180 kbps (22.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 148 kbps (18.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Test 2
4 Bar 3G signal. Moved my modem to a higher location (1 meter higher). The modem's LED went from blue, to a lighter blue (indicating HSDPA coverage!). My connection went all unstable. Even after I reconnected the connection stayed unstable. First load of the vodacom speed test site failed!
Download Speed: 157 kbps (19.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 9 kbps (1.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

This second upload rating of 9kbps is quite understandable. The upload test went all the way to 100%, then it just stayed like that. It did nothing. Connection windows showed no activity at all.Something just went wrong with the unstable connection.

Hello ld13

My E220 was also moody when I got it mid January... changing colour (mode) to a point of instability.
My eventual resolve was the Huawei software/drivers - after trying Vodafone Mobile Connect - which is a bit better than Lite.
Vodashop actually said I should bring my PC and modem to them and they could install Mobile Connect - not sure which version would work though....

The changing from 3G to HSDPA and back should not be signal related - HSDPA can rather be seen as a mode of 3G. What you don't want is 3G to GPRS and back all the time - that is different frequency/tower/technology etc.
I have noticed - and suspect it the result of recent software updates being installed - mine goes to 3G when idle quite often, but switches to HSDPA when needed (data being transferred).

Short of advocating placing the warranty at risk by flashing the Huawei software - try/check some of the following:

Maybe just double check your PC for starters - what cpu/ram/os are you running?
Is USB2 alive and well on the machine?
Try using the longer cable and plug in both ends to ensure full power to the modem.
Check all possible power saving settings?
Windows XP - latest service pack (2) and no updates wating to be installed - I have noticed some XP machines becoming cr@ppy when these updates are downloaded and not installed.

If you modem is left plugged into the same PC, try Vodafone Mobile Connect - think they are giving v9.1 on a CD lately - guess I am not the only one who was bleating...

Happy hunting.:D

I noticed this post goes back to the 13th of June and it seems many people are still experiencing this problem. I now am also suffering from slow throughput, timeouts and generally very poor performance, coupled with numerous problems with the site I connect to, which have been continuing for almost 2 months now. This is past the point of "bare with us" .... something must be seriously wrong.

I am unfortunately stuck with no phone lines since the 11th of February and Telkom refuses to replace the lines that were stolen.

So I really have no other connectivity but through Vodacom and the performance has been degrading gradually all the time, today and tonight in particular has been the worst yet.

The problems in my case are not due to higher usage in my area, that has been ruled out already between myself and the Vodacom engineer whom I deal with on a daily basis. I have adequate information that it relates to faults on a much bigger scale, but exactly what those faults are I am still in the dark.

Can Vodacom reveal what the real issue is behind all this slow throughout? I am getting the kind of speeds I would expect from a 56K dialup or lower. Today I was getting better performance from GPRS than 3G/HSDPA.

:(
not funny on this side.
It crossed my mind when posting the results - and done during busy time on the network possibly..
Check some of the stuff I posted for ld13 - maybe can be of help to you...

 today's date is: 2007-06-13, aka the 13th of June 2007.

Yeah silly me ..... shows how functional my head is at the moment when I write like that LOL. Actually March 2007 is correct from first post. Thanks for pointing out ic I need to get to bed ... had nothing but 3am/4am late nights for the last 2 weeks with all the interruptions to service that my head is just NOT with it anymore.

Getting constant error 619's, can't connect at all with a PPDB, am I the only one or is any one else having problems?

Same problems here. Tried almost 30 times, and eventually got connected on PPDB.
