Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

Only times I have some kind of speed (then I mean about 10-15Kb/s) is very early in the morning. During the day it slows way down and average 'bout 2Kb/s. But then I have time to make coffee while waiting. :D

Thanks for the update !

That must be on GPRS, can't be on 3G?

We don't have 3g on our towers, that's what this is all about. We are begging for 3g. You'll see in my sig that I'm just waiting for the friendly Vodacom trokkie to bring the equipment. Vodacom3g is trying to assist with this and I really appreciate all his effort.

Oh ok I actually remember that from your previous posts now, was just checking. :) GPRS is painful.

Wow!, with which test was this? speed.vodacom.co.za?

I've forwarded your number to billing, BTW.

Oi vey, what's going on today

Location: Garsfontein, Pretoria
Card: Huwaei 620
IMEI: 357130000600456
Signal Strength: -59dbm
Vodacom Speed Test: Upload - 255, Download - 781 (All groovy with the network)

++++ PROBLEMS++++ (Started at around 9.30am - 10am today)
SpeedTest.net (Selected sever in Cape Town)
Upload: 4ms, Download: 155ms, ping 313ms

Gamco: Current Bandwidth reading - 130.60kbps

I did phone 155 and reported it. The tecchie said that he cannot see any problem but would escalate the problem. He also said that there could be a lot of users on the tower that I use which could affect the speeds that I am browsing at. I understand that but I do not pay for a service only to have timeouts, longer load times than a 56k dial-up.

As ic also mentioned problems with his SAIX-ADSL, it could be on their side. Is there a way to confirm where the problem lay without having to wait 24hrs for feedback from Vodacom?

I'll ask.

Spoke too soon last week. Yesterday 3G was painfully slow in Langebaan and this morning I get two bars but no connection!

Hi,

Just wanted to say, that my joy was short lived. Still waiting for 155 to call me back.

Ciao

Yes, it was on speed.vodacom

Mr 3G, what is 3G CS and 3G PS ?
At the moment my connection shows 3G PS.
At about 20h00 it showed 3G CS for a couple of seconds and then No Network for a while.
That is now the Langebaan connection with the Mykanos tower.

CS is Circuit Switched and PS Packet Switched. not sure why your dash gets confused (mine does as well) as there is no such thing as 3G CS.

My dashboard will carry on working irrelevant of what it shows, so you can probably just ignore it.

VCPP data-bundle: Downlink "blocked" after 10 min.

Hi, I'm also experiencing a similar problem, that ONLY occurs when I use a prepaid VC SIM in my E220:

When the connection remains inactive for about 10 minutes, or more, the the downlink seems to get "blocked", and stays "blocked" until you disconnect and re-connect. However, the uplink still continues to work.

I reported the problem to VC TechSupp, but they assured me that everything was "normal" at their end. One solution, that seems to work, is to use a "keep alive" program that sends out a "ping" every few minutes. I currently leave MS Outlook running, with auto mail downloads occuring at 5-minute intervals, to achieve continuity.

Yes, I have upgraded the firmware, and have updated the desktop software, etc. Have also done a SIM-swop, and tried yet a different prepaid SIM, but have eventually proved that the problem does NOT occur when one uses a monthly contract account (i.e. non-prepaid/top-up) SIM.

Unfortunately, the connection often gets confused for other reasons; like when automatic switchovers between HSDPA/3G/GPRS occur ("3G only/3G preferred" etc), or when signal strength falls very low. This has also led to the modem staying connected, but locked-up, and needing to be reset by unplugging the USB cable to electrically disconnect it. But these two issues are very different.

Has anyone had a similar problem with their data transfer using an E220 and a VC pre-paid contract and data-bundle?

P

Langebaan is good today

Well today things are better again

Hi, and thank you, to ic & vodacom3g, for your suggestions.

I've eliminated most, if not all, commonalities (...all things being equal...) - the only variable left is the PP SIM vs. Contract SIM. I've tried a 32k PP SIM, a 64k PP SIM, and a 32k contract SIM, under all conditions, but the problem stays with the prepaids.

My VC Everyday W/E contract expires at the end of this month, and I'd like to continue using prepaid bundles with the E220, so I need to fix the problem soon.

I think I'll follow V3G's advice and log a new query with VC TechSupp.

Thanks again,
P
