a) correction, they did as SABC suffer under the apartheid - but personally I feel it's BS to base a job position because of what happened in the past... if we could dig ourselves out of a hole then shouldn't that apply to all BEE's? Personally I don't want to be given a position because of my status. Yet I do not want to be overlooked for a position because of status.
b) Well the home affairs that I'm re-applying for my citizenship (for the 3rd time) is telling me that because my parents didn't have their citizenship at the time I was born, I don't qualify. So far it's taken them 8 months to get a verification of my PR... feking **** home affairs!
a) Agreed. I don't think any reasonable person can argue with what u r saying. Chairman of CASA (Chinese Association of South Africa) believes in skills and education, not job reservations, so I think CASA will push for that in discussions/debates with various 'black' groups and/or government. I think this should show that SABC's did not want 'black' status for enrichment, but instead for recognition. Hopefully CASA will have more of a voice now, as a 'black' organisation.
That said, you won't see me saying no to BEE share offers as I don't rub my hands in glee thinking of the potential profits in store for me personally, but instead see potential profit as a way to help those around me. The Chinese S.African associations are all non-profit organisations and do support worthy causes. And this is only made possible by donations and fund-raising efforts by the SA Chinese community. You will also find many so called 'new' immigrants donating to these causes as a gesture of good will to their new home.
In any event, Chinese S.Africans will likely be pushed to the bottom of the queue w.r.t. BEE or EEA opportunities, effectively I guess just a touch above our pale male brethren. Not that many SABC 30-somethings are even left though, many have emigrated for better pastures...
b) Sounds like a complicated situation there...
I hear thru the grapevine that Vodacom are being very strict about who is 'black' and who is not i.t.o. who can apply.
I don't know how they plan to enforce this though, as ID's don't state race on there anymore. Well, if I have to dig out the birth certificate it has a non-white code at the end, if it comes to that...
*sigh* race classification is BS, isn't it.
c) I'm all for bursaries and other skills upliftment funding being thrown at people (or their children) to help them get out from under the poverty line. Educate the children and they can look after their parents. If only gov had implemented this 10 years back? We would be half-way there by now!!
