Vodacom shares

I'm just wondering when BEE deals or affirmative action will become non-existence and everybody will have the same oppurtunity?

Telecoms shares, especially the leading operators often tend to climb steadily in the first 2-5 years of listing and I would really would love to get my hands on them as early as possible.

Pity I don't have R2.5k laying around - if I had more dosh I would certainly buy more.

For all the white peeps that can't get in on the action - Why not get a person of colour to purchase on your behalf and setup a deal between the two of you?

Vodacom BEE Deal

Face it, if you are white in South Africa you are screwed. The government can't tell you to get out by saying so, so instead they make it impossible for white people to flourish by setting up laws in favor of blacks. The right way to have set it up would be to provide a level playing field where everyone has the same opportunities as everyone else. BEE doesn't even favor the ordinary "previously disadvantaged" person in the street. As usual only a few of the elite are benefiting from BEE deals. As from a previously disadvantaged viewpoint - who built South Africa into the country it current is ? It was the whites. People tend to forget that the current S.A. government started a culture of non-payment and had a really hard time convincing the previously non-paying public to start paying.

BEE and AA will never be done away with. Too much control exists in these policies to make citizens feel alienated.

All you non-blacks stop crying like idiots. In every BEE discussion there are always the few that must disagree with it and say "But what about us".

I dont think some of you realise what apartheid did to people of colour. Imagine being forced to move out of your house and forced to move to a slum? I dont feel like going on...

So please stfu
EH? are you targeting me? just so you know Local SABC (SOUTH AFRICA BORN CHINESE) are considered as BEE...

I'm bitching that I'm not a SA citizen becos of some fek up at the Home affairs, my ID states Born in South africa and yet non SA citizen!

My thoughts exactly. With Vodacom's growth slowing down dramatically, now is the best time for them to do the BEE deal.

Somehow I don't see VC getting double digit real growth again.

Yip!

My views:
They need to stay ahead of the game and the MTNs and CellCs.
Theres no new growth on the mobile side everythings open now, they need to retains their customers somehow, and loyalties wont last forever. Its in the other SP hands now. MTN are growing rapidly, Ive seen their target for SA if that strategy works out who knows...
New CEO has alot to do to prove to the shareholders he's worthy.
Vodafones actions within the company could have a negative influence.

Good points to buy shares:
When Vodafone takes control I think the share price will increase.
As a fixed line operator theres alot of potential for the company.

So imo theres 2 points that are in favour of the share price. Ill put a 10k investment there....

Anyone here going for the max allowed ie R36m? :D

I was reviewing the prospectus online and think this is an exceptionally good offer - your R2500 gets you effective ownership of over 6 times that value.

I didn't get an Sasol shares, so I think I'll make my move here.

I'll be hoping to get my hands on 200 shares :) Has to wait till next month though - going on leave and putting my cash flow towards drinks :D

a) Are u implying that SABC's did not suffer legislative discrimination under Apartheid?

b) What does Home Affairs say when u ask them about the stuff up w.r.t. your ID document?

a) correction, they did as SABC suffer under the apartheid - but personally I feel it's BS to base a job position because of what happened in the past... if we could dig ourselves out of a hole then shouldn't that apply to all BEE's? Personally I don't want to be given a position because of my status. Yet I do not want to be overlooked for a position because of status.

b) Well the home affairs that I'm re-applying for my citizenship (for the 3rd time) is telling me that because my parents didn't have their citizenship at the time I was born, I don't qualify. So far it's taken them 8 months to get a verification of my PR... feking **** home affairs!

a) Agreed. I don't think any reasonable person can argue with what u r saying. Chairman of CASA (Chinese Association of South Africa) believes in skills and education, not job reservations, so I think CASA will push for that in discussions/debates with various 'black' groups and/or government. I think this should show that SABC's did not want 'black' status for enrichment, but instead for recognition. Hopefully CASA will have more of a voice now, as a 'black' organisation.

That said, you won't see me saying no to BEE share offers as I don't rub my hands in glee thinking of the potential profits in store for me personally, but instead see potential profit as a way to help those around me. The Chinese S.African associations are all non-profit organisations and do support worthy causes. And this is only made possible by donations and fund-raising efforts by the SA Chinese community. You will also find many so called 'new' immigrants donating to these causes as a gesture of good will to their new home.

In any event, Chinese S.Africans will likely be pushed to the bottom of the queue w.r.t. BEE or EEA opportunities, effectively I guess just a touch above our pale male brethren. Not that many SABC 30-somethings are even left though, many have emigrated for better pastures...

b) Sounds like a complicated situation there...

I hear thru the grapevine that Vodacom are being very strict about who is 'black' and who is not i.t.o. who can apply.

I don't know how they plan to enforce this though, as ID's don't state race on there anymore. Well, if I have to dig out the birth certificate it has a non-white code at the end, if it comes to that...

*sigh* race classification is BS, isn't it.

c) I'm all for bursaries and other skills upliftment funding being thrown at people (or their children) to help them get out from under the poverty line. Educate the children and they can look after their parents. If only gov had implemented this 10 years back? We would be half-way there by now!! :(
