Weird.. i checked the specs on vodacom site.... it says "Smartphone: No".

i am looking for workhorse... mainly calls.....i saw the call time = 6hrs, what is the standby time like?

It runs Android Kit Kat so it is very much a smartphone.

Is this phone really as slow as people are claiming? I bought one yesterday for my Mom's birthday. She's new to the world of Smartphones and really just wants to be able to Whatsapp her friends. I thought this phone would be a good place to start.

My other options included the Huawei Y220, Alcatel Pixi and MTN Steppa.

Its not slow from the tests I did. Whatsapp and so on will run fine. You cannot expect heavy hitting apps to run smoothly though, as remember it is still an entry level smartphone. Think peoples expectations are sometimes too high, especially considering the price they are paying.
