Vodacom SuperMobile project

Changes... Changes... Changes..... All "In Progress"...

"a quality Android smartphone to the market this year which will cost around R500"

One can only dream :)

Just drop data prices and you will c many more adopt. Most people you speak with are afraid of data costs and that scared that the bill can run up - out of hand without any control....

Getting South Africans connected to the Internet at a speed of at least 1Mbps, and HSPA+ and LTE can help a great deal

Vodacom, MTN, 8ta and Cell C are battling it out for market share in the South African mobile broadband market - their weapons; faster network speeds and lower data prices.

I read the rest of the article with high hopes, sadly the word price was never again mentioned.

I have come to the conclusion that the CEOs of the three mobile networks in this country are all would-be politicians - no matter hoe many times you tell them the same thing, they are not interested at all.

Maybe a complete ban on mentioning any speed whatsoever is necessary. The only thing Arrive Alive is achieving through its boring campaign is to get me to agree to "Speed kills". The whole speed thing is a joke. Give me 3.6 at an affordable rate and I will enter into some sort of a prepaid arrangement with your company.

Getting South Africans connected to the Internet at a cost of around 7c/Mb wouldn't help a great deal, it will help a hell of a lot.

Agreed, I cannot believe no regulation exists which governs selling uncapped high speed pay per MB services to unsuspecting customers. I dont find that very ethical, and that makes the smiling gentleman seem a bit mennacing.

"Vodacom CEO Pieter Uys is so passionate about offering all South Africans access to the Internet at real-world speeds of at least 1Mbps, that he launched a SuperMobile project to make this a reality."

What kak is he talking about.

How does SA mobile broadband prices compare to the rest of the world? I am sure we're up their with the cheapest.

Great suggestion, but how about picking up the phone and contacting the other CEOs ?
Put your great idea of a single shared wireless network to practice - I am sure Lars and Pinky would not mind sharing some of them and make it a reality......or have you already left for your golf appointment Pietie ?

a Few quotes from the article (TIC for Jannie).

The smoke and mirrors : ....aimed at......average performance.......at real-world speeds of a least 1 Mbps (great anomaly :D )
The pre-nuptial exuses : ......penetration is verly low in SA.......is very expensive and resource intensive......plough 6.6 bil......does not make financial sense

By now, I think myBB formunites are seeing right through all these delusional gymnastics.

Pieter - please stop talking K@K. You don't need a grand master plan, and billions of rands (OK a few Billion to upgrade the network will help), and invitations to be sent to Government, ICASA and the other Fat Cat Operators, so that they may cooperate.

All you need to to is drop prices to something sane. Like 10c a MB. Make in-bundle and out-of-bundle rates the same, or very close, and stop scaring people into using the mobile internet.

That is how you will connect the masses. It's pretty darn simple. Why don't you get that into your thick skull.

We're all sick of being ripped off. Really now. You're acting like the ANC.

Uys is also confident that their WebBox Internet-on-your-TV device may help in their quest to get more people online, albeit not with its current pricing model.

So they finally realize how stupid they were... well, it is at least somewhat encouraging that they're able to acknowledge their mistake, albeit long after mBB posters have pointed it out.

Ummm...its vodafone thats upgrading the network so that some old fart from the UK will get internet when roaming. Please at no time fool your selves into thinking that this is for South Africans.

Hehe. Some feisty posts in this thread just got ninja'd. Pity, though I understand why.

I don't quite get what this supermobile project is though? I just read "make everything better", without getting any actual idea what they want to practically change.

...it is very important for the South African economy that all South Africans have broadband access. However, this is far easier said than done.
PC penetration is very low in SA, and to build a 3G network which covers the whole country is very expensive and resource intensive.

That's exactly what Cell C is aiming for, thanks for joining the party in 2011!

No mention of price ?

So with internet connection and super speeds, the rural population can spend their weekly wages in 10 minutes flat

So much for empowering the poor
