Vodacom to unlock data cards

This is a very impressive response from Vodacom imho.
Well done Voda, good job.

Vodacom has responded positively to customer demands by initiating a process to unblock all network locked 3G/HSDPA data cards.

No why can Telkom not be so customer focused and drop the line rental.

It is encouraging to see that Vodacom truly listens to their customers and makes some decisions based on customer demands rather than just the company’s profit margin.

Take a hint Telkom and do the same.

"Vodacom also said that all new cards or 3G/HSDPA devices will not be network-locked."

er.. What does that mean anyone?

@aspersie : the cards that are produced and sold from now on wont be network locked..

Like in the old days when you got a phone on contract from either MTN or Voda, it could only be used on their network, and was useless if you switched to the opposition (locked to one specific network)
Now, they wont network lock the hardware they sell.

You are free to use it on other networks, so you dont have to repurchase another card should you change providers or travel.

sory i'll still don't get it how does it help me?

If your hardware is locked then you can only use it on the network you bought it from, because say you try and put a cellc sim in a vodacom phone that is network clocked it won't work. It needs to be unlocked (the phone) to enable you to use the cellc sim in the vodacome phone.

lol all these explanations saying the same thing :D
Im sure u understand now aspersie?

Unlocking Support?

Vodacom should unlock their call centre -a shocking experience when you try to get technical support

LOL, I'm pretty sure they forget to unlock the call centre for thier staff to get in, held on for 72 Minutes the other day before giving up, that was after having called twice before and holding for 28 and 46 minutes respectively.

unfortunately my contract was renewed only a few months ago, but when my next upgrade arrives, it's bye bye Vodacom, forever, since i can now keep my number I no longer have to stay with them, I think Telscum can actually teach them a few things about customer support, and that says a lot.

Good on them

Looks like the consumer is being heard. Thanks to Myadsl!!

Who writes this stuff?
Vodacom were not thinking of their customers when they locked the damned things. Now they want us to sing praises for them.

I agree. Imagine the uproar that would happen if Telkom ever network lock their ADSL routers. (Telkom - please don't get any ideas). Why did Vodacom get away with it for so long? And why this positive spin? And does MTN and Cell C network lock their equipment?

Very impressive response indeed. The question is, why did they lock the damn cards in the first place? All this waste of time and valuable resources could have been avoided if they did the right thing the first time. Who pays for the poor consumer who has to take his/her valuable time off from work to travel to Vodacom Center and stand in the queue for the card to be unblocked?

LOL, you know that there is a HUGE amount of irony there - every functioning ADSL modem and router in SA is already network locked into the Telkodemonopolies ADSL network!!!
Why did Vodacom get away with it for so long?...
[post=599626]Related thread...[/post]Vodacom only started locking Huawei HSDPA data cards in July [2006] - not exactly so long :).

I think someone realised that you cannot have number portability with a locked device and then decided to spin it into the PR Good people thing
