Maybe this is for V3G, but does anyone know how I can bar SMS messages from a certain number?
My problem is that I keep on receiving 'in contact' SMS messages from FNB regarding an account. I don't even have an account with FNB.
It gets rather irritating, because each time they withdraw money, or a debit goes off, I get the SMS, and it's especially irritating at 3am  I've been to my local FNB branch to tell them about this, but they say they can't help me, unless I know the bank account number of this person!!

PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP ME!!!

i had a similar problem, but thank goodness it stopped.

Be carefull and read this warning by ABSA on their homepage;

Absa warns against online fraud
27 March 2007

Absa is urging its customers to be cautious when they receive emails requesting personal bank account information.
Several cases of Phishing, a technique used by fraudsters to gain personal information for purposes of identity theft have recently been reported.
E-mails displaying the names and logos of legitimate businesses including banks are sent to individuals requesting them to verify or update personal information. Usually a link to a bogus website is provided and customers are requested to logon to the bogus site using their Internet banking access details. The access details are then harvested and used to defraud the customer.
Absa would like to remind its customers that it will never request any confidential information from customers over the phone or via email.
Unless customers are requested to visit a local Absa branch to confirm details, they should be suspicious of any request for information

I fail to see what this has to do with this thread. The person is complaining about SMS's sent to his phone when transactions are passed over a 3rd parties account - clearly FNB has the wrong cell number registered for the account.

BTW - Like your nick - sounds like the 5th mobile operator.... :)

This is only a warning by ABSA for people to be on the lookout for SMS's from banks.
I thought that this forum is also available to warn people against possible attacks, but it seems to me that you've proved me wrong.

How exactly is an inContact sms from FNB where he doesn't even have an account and which doesn't request any personal info going to result in phishing? I don't see any mention of sms in the ABSA warning anyway, I'm sure "over the phone" implies voice.

AFAIK Vodacom does not provide a way of blocking SMSes from a particular sender to individual cell numbers, <irrelevant>the other thing is that if you <deleted>[-]have[/-]</deleted> <added>also had</added> an FNB account and use inContact then inContact SMSes for your own account would also be blocked...</irrelevant>

Usually SMSes from FNB include a reference number, and while FNB branches might not be sufficiently competent to find the associated account number, maybe FNB's Internet Banking division can find the associated account number based on a reference number from one of the SMSes and at the very least attempt to contact their customer via some other means and request that the customer updates the cell number used for inContact.

At the very least, FNB is accidentally sending you confidential information about someone else's bank account transactions, which is a breach of confidentiality - even though you don't know the associated account number...

I've been getting SMS's from FNB as well, but marketing ones. Just like you, I'm not a FNB client so I've got no idea where they come from.

The best way to address this is to complain directly to FNB. Mail their customer care and cc any relevant e-mail you can find. Most companies will have a few different e-mails listed.

The best angle to get their attention is to highlight the fact that they're breaking the law by not providing an unsubscribe option.

I wouldn't be too impressed if someone was getting details of my transactions. They should have a system where once you register your number they sms you a confirmation code and then you have to enter that before they send you further sms's.

Yep, was thinking the same thing, the question is how to get banks etc to implement a subscription confirmation system...

Thanks for all the replies and advice. The info I get is the last 6 digits of the Account no, transaction amount, the ATM the money was drawn from (mainly Khatu.....Somewhere in the Cape? Very far away from me anyway!), or the company the debit order went to, remaining balance and time and date.

And yes, I too wouldn't be impressed if a total stranger had my bank balance details etc...

FNB says they need the full account no (13 or 15 digits) etc.
O, and BTW, the no. I get the sms's from is 082 007 0152/3/4
