Also noticed that on v4me last night - after a longish Skype2Skype conversation I wanted to check how much of my my data bundle was left, and nothing in the current billing period past 2007-01-01...

Hmmm, just as well my ADSL line is working again...Skype? That explains it.
The new R10/Mb for VoIP kicked in on the 1st of Jan and there's probably a delay in counting the records.....

Depends on the available bandwidth and adaptive routing via P2P and available supernodes, but approximately anywhere between 20kbits/s and 80kbits/s - I haven't got DUMeter or NetMeter installed in heXPee so I cannot be more specific ATM...
Which is the point of broadband - one should not have to live in continual fear of the cost of transferring data [regardless of what that data is being used for]...Ok, my Skype conversations just tend to go on for hours so wondering how much damage they'd do if I do them over Vodacom instead of over ADSL.
Still only up to 2007-01-01 on v4me...

Best would be to do an actual test with something like DU Meter / Netlimiter and no other apps running (probably not easy), or else use a proper IP sniffer, (such as Ethereal), and trace the source/destination IP-pair. Voice is by nature bursty and full-duplex, so the best would be to do a relative long test.
My own tests showed Skype NOT to be nearly as efficient as thought. Definitely not as good as normal CS switched voice, which is way under 20Kb/s.
Although Skype will work at 20Kb/s, it seems to get happy at closer to 60 and works well at 80. (Remember it's full-duplex, so you must count the data, and thus money, twice).
Thinking about it, maybe something like Netlimiter is not a bad idea as it'll allow you to throttle the app, giving you a known max cents/minute number. Use the lowest possible number that still gives acceptable quality.

On prepaid thats R60/hr
and on best contract price R12/hr
