Huawei removed the software from their site??

I've been searching the whole of yesterday, registered an account at the Huawei site, but everytime I go to the
E220 page it's just empty with nothing to download :(

Another URL perhaps that's not on Huawei's website??

I tried going to the page where I downloaded the software previously - here is the link. But it is also blank at the moment. Possibly they are updating the page.

I'm having the same problem, can't find the files for the huawei generic dash anywhere on the net. Can anyone help? VMC is giving me the slow puncture...

Problems with the E220

It has taken me a while to get this to work.

My initial error message was the Vodaphone connection software did not recognise the modem. This resulted in me not being able to do anything. After I removed the Vodafone software I found I was not able to install it again due to there being a complaint about another piece of software not having been set up correctly. I don't think that this was Vodafones fault though.

I found somewhere else a pointer to updates from Huawei. They can be obtained from http://www.huawei.com/mobileweb/en/doc/list.do?type=-1&id=736. Once I downloaded this I was able to install it. Please note the RAR contains an update for the USB modem (EXE) and an ISO image. The ISO is just the same as to what you have if you update and access the flash drive.

I initially didn't have any joy, things started working after I installed from the ISO and used the double headed USB cable, the Connection Manager recognised the modem, but, I was unable to surf. I knew the modem was working as I was able to send SMS's. You should note that in order to get the modem to work the order I must plug the USB cable in is important. First the UCB connector with a single cable in it, followed by the USB connector with the 2 cables in it. The modem should be connected to the cable before you plug them into the PC.

After a call to the Vodacom help desk they told me to add
at+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet"
(this is case sensitive). Access the modem from controll panel and set this in the extra initialisation commands text box.

After doing this surfing works.

Please note that this is what has worked for me and I've added it here to others can be relieved of the frustration I've been through :) YMMV.

P.S. I was only able to run the dashboard update AFTER I got the connection Manager to recognise the modem.

Has there been any improvement in reception or accessing 3g network after you have updated the software, and does the 3g only profile help?

I have not had any problems connecting. I have set my profile to be 3G only though. I have been connecting mostly at 3.6MB (according to the balloon from XP)

Do away with the standard software

I took ic's advice and put on the generic Huawei mobile connect software <from one of the links on this forum>. It solved my GPRS only problem, my XP not recognising the modem problem, and it did away with the 40 second delay everytime I plugged in the modem before I could connect.

Oh and it also solved the no sms problem. Fantastic stuff!

@TCBW, the 3.6 mbps is not your connection speed. This is the maximum speed the modem can work at. You'll have to do a speed test to check your connection speed.

Speed test chow bandwidth

I just checked up a couple of days ago (when I was enjoying flying into the red) that the speed tests actually take about 1.8mb a pop. Thats pretty stiff when you're capped.

I'd just judge by a download x 8 for now to get my kbps. Its exactly what the site does anyway.

When it says it's connected at 3.6 I'm getting sustained downloads of over 200 kB/s so I'm pretty sure it's close to 3.6mb/s.

Well, it could still be just normal HSPDA. 200 kByte/sec = 1.6 Mbit/sec

Does your family by any chance live within the tower  ?

On the contrary, at a certain point closer to the tower the signal will deteriorate :)

So, does anyone have this thing working on Vista yet? I am itching to install Vista on my laptop but internet connectivity is not negotiable...
