Vodacom have announced this service - http://www.vodacom.co.za/services/voicemail2sms/voicemail2sms.jsp

But I am sceptical of how well it can work. Has anyone tried it?

* With an active voicemail service, the voicemail messages left for you by a caller (in English) will be delivered to you via SMS as soon as the caller’s completed his/her message;
* You will receive an SMS containing the voicemail message;
* You will still be able to listen to your voicemail messages, by dialling 121, free from your Vodacom cellphone;
* Messages left in a language other than English, or in instances where the speech of the caller is unclear, will not be converted to text and you will receive an SMS informing you that a person called and left a new message that could not be converted. To listen to the message, dial 121.
* You can use Vodacom’s Voicemail2sms service while travelling and using Vodacom’s roaming services.

Seems to me a lot of the voicemails I receive have unclear parts.

Its cool but doesnt recognize all types of word and pronunciations. But you can make out what it says, my name comes out different in every message!!:p

But other than that, is it pretty accurate?

I was also very impressed with the accuracy of the service... but I think that R99pm is a bit steap...

I've been using it for a while and it actually works quite well. If it can't translate the message, it'll still send you an SMS that you have a voicemail waiting, it could not translate.

I find it very useful if I'm stuck in meetings and can't take a call or even listen to a voicemail. Now you can 'see' your voicemail and can respond (the 'sender' stays the number that left the voicemail) directly to it via SMS.

Definitely a usable tool if you often can't answer the phone.

I would like to see (and have asked for) a facility where I can also delete the voicemail once I've received the SMS. The current system still requires you to dial in to delete.

There is another, similar product as part of the VoiceMail+ service where you can have your voicemails forwarded to your e-mail account as a .wav file. Quite nice if you don't have your phone with you or you want to save voicemails.

Phone me and leave a voicemail and I'll forward you the SMS.

If you want all your voice mails, calls, etc recorded (if you have a half-decent phone) get yourself voice recording software for your phone. You can then send the recordings to wherever you want by Bluetooth or email. It is very useful, especially to prove to Helpless Desk staff that someone promised to attend to it and get back to you within an hour...
