Voip Question

Is Skype Prices To SA To SA Cellphone And Landline Cheaper Than Telkom?

sorry... Yes, they are cheaper. and that phone should work fine on the Skype network. But remember, for Skype to landline calls you have to buy credits with your paypal or credit card. I've never had a problem though and have saved literally thousands in long distance phone calls. I even rented a number in the USA so that our family there could call us for less. skype is a breeze and a pleasure to use.

check the Skype forums and FAQs for the exact prices... but last time I checked they were all cheaper.

Voipraider (www.voipraider.com) is the cheapest service that I know of. They currently offer free calls to SA landlines as well as to many other international destinations. They also let you test out the service free of charge for ~1 hour.

will this work on the phone that i im getting? i posted a link above

@matrixweb: Personally I prefer to just use the landline phone to phone option as this gives the best quality. I have also used their softphone with cheap headphones and a microphone but I'm sure that you should be able to use the phone that appears in your link. Just download the software from their website and test it out free of charge to see if it meets your requirements.

i already paid for the phone so i dont want it to go to waste:(

that phone is fine and most generic USB phones also work just fine. Skype's voice quality is excellent over ADSL.

I would strongly suggest you read all that you can on the Skype Website and others like VOIP Raider. You will get a lot of info there without us having to duplicate it here. Skype have forums as well where you can ask and get questions answered.

The best though is to download the Skype client. Hook up with some of us or some of your family on Skype and test it on their free system before you buy any credits.

is it possible to use the usb phone on voip raider?

Most of the cheap USB phones function like sound cards. Instead of routing the softphone through the PC sound card via a microphone and earphones the sound is routed through the mic and speaker of the USB phone. Voipraider should be compatible with most of these phones.

R300 seems a bit expensive for a simple USB phone though. You should be able to get a simple device for R100~R150.

Incredible Connection often sells a Skype Starter Pack which includes a simple mic/earphone, software CD and some SkypeOut credit for ~R49.

If you don't need to make a large number of local/international Voip calls you could also investigate www.bopcall.com - you can purchase as little as R35 worth of airtime and make payment into a local bank account. In the case of Voipraider you may need to make payment using a credit card, PayPal or possibly via a Western Union money transfer.

I feel the best skype phones are manufactured by Microsoft. I have seen it at Incredible Connection

VOIPraider and Skype are both good, VOIPraider's quite a bit cheaper though.

Its Not The Phone A Provider That Will Work With The Phone

as the poster above said, the USB phones basically just function as another sound card so there is no reason why it should not work with any VOIP provider and Video or IM programs (like GoogleTalk and MSN).

I have never tried VOIP Raider... will give it a try now seeing as some of you guys are recommending them. I have always been happy with Skype... have given them thousands of Rands of business over the last few years.

Just one other note, some of these guys work through Paypal, which is fine, I have used paypal a lot. BUT, paypal have been known to lock people's accounts for "suspicious" behaviour reasons, that happened to me once years ago. Just be aware that you should not trust Paypal any more than they trust you. They are fine in terms of their financial transactions but their treatment of customers and security measures are draconian and never in favour of the customer. If they label you as "suspicious" then that is it, you don't stand a chance. Just one thing to be aware of. Rather work through one credit card company if you can. In fact, I suggest you get one card that is ONLY for online transactions with a low credit card limit.
