I'm going to err a little on the side of cynicism here. There is sufficient evidence to suggest that unwritten history is often and entirely inaccurate and completely removed from actual events. We know the history of the Bushman, for example is rather well documented in their paintings. We also know that different versions of scriptures has led to much fantasy and little substantiated truth in the worlds most popular religions.
Therefore, when ideologies such as these are entered into debate, I would stress that these in some cases may well be construed as simple fairytales.
