VOTE for better DATA RATES

mams, if you have links to their pricing models, won't you post it here?

The Portugal pricing looks extremely low, will need to check if the chart is right.

im quite sure u posted that comparison chart on the forum - its a PDF file named : Data Card Price Plans...check it out

Europe [i.e. UK] isnt that expensive either , their contracts are almost identical to ours [actually cheaper considering they use 12 month contracts not 24],

i.e. In UK, you get the card for free, pay ÂŁ50 monthly and get 1000Mb . [standard 12 month contract directly via vodafone...]

Also this site:
http://www.mobiles.co.uk/vodafone-3g-mobile-connect-data-card.html
Mobile Connect 3G Data Card on Vodafone

Mobile Connect Unlimited Free n/a ÂŁ45.00 Unlimited use **

Am i missing something? Unlimited use [or fair use] for ÂŁ45.00 ?

Plus direct conversion it's pretty close to our contracts BUT have to take into account the buying/earning power of pounds when in the UK.

AND the killier difference between UK and SA contracts :

Connections are subject to status and a minimum 12 month airtime agreement with UK residents aged 18 years or over.

In the end, if a direct currency conversion amounts to the UK being cheaper [which as far as i can see is the case] then even cellphones operators will eventually be joining Telkom in the "lets see how much we can milk the SA public"-business strategy.

Checked out their website:
it seems the info on the comparison chart is incomplete...the chart has per mb on some countries and per kb or 20kb on others but for Portugal it doesnt say anything - just the rate
I checked their website and its per kb!!!
Check their website ( portugese though ):
http://www.vodafone.pt/main/Servicos+Roaming/Servicos/WapDados/GPRS.htm

Regarding Austria the chart does clearly specify that it is per mb.

More interesting rates:
India again...this time TATA Mobile ( which is owned by VSNL who are the SNO partner ):
http://www.tataindicom.com/products/data/internet_mobile/enterprise/nokia.asp

Check these rates: ( CDMA - dont know speed but do know that its definitely at least as fast as EDGE if not 3g unless they already have WCDMA which is than 3g and HSDPA - they probably would have it) ( V3g can confirm base speed on normal CDMA )
R940 per year gives you 1 gb per month = R78.33 monthly per gb ( under 8c per mb ) and 70 c per extra mb ( not too good ...)

OR

R210.53 per month for uncapped, unlimited Gigs!!!!

HEY, give us something like that!!

checked around the internet...seems in 2002 they had speeds of between 144 and 288kbps and cant seem to find what they have upgraded to...because the core is CDMA, i would think they on 3 g speeds if not higher! and R210 uncapped..thats cheap!!

i really dont want to go onto the Voice thingy...there we are really loosing compared to all countries.....just one example tariff:
333 rupees ( roughly R46 ) gives you 333 anytime minutes and 333 sms....14c per min plus the smses...

Vodacom BE BRAVE: and get South Africa in line with international telecom rates - mobile calls and data - give us the best you can and let South Africans be able to be productive....the only thing that stops us from competing in the international markets ( effectively ) is the cost of our communications which causes us to be an EXPENSIVE country to do business from and with....

Checked their website: they were talking of 160kbps ( 2002 ) and of mobile TV etc so they obviously have fast speeds ( upgraded network )

Sheesh, I think CDMA works diferently to GPRS though... I belive it's like dialup if I remember correctly.

same like GPRS ( WCDMA is 3g )
checked another Indian cell CDMA company website ( seems India has over 20+ networks ! )

They called RELIANCE MOBILE.
They say they have CDMA2000 1X technology with speeds of 144kbps and offer the ffg:

http://www.relianceinfo.com/Infocomm/Rim/rconnect_tariffs_details.html

Many tariffs...one has unlimited usage at night 10 pm to 6am etc
The uncapped tariff is:
R 210.53 per month ( like TATA )

and if you want EDGE and not CDMA..even better rate of R70 unlimited from IDEA cellular...
I cant check every website, but i suspect there are many companies offering similar deals

so there are plenty networks giving so low rates...
V3G: are we going to get into the real world soon?

Reduce out of bundle rates to R1 per MB. Let peak hour usage come off the bundle with "uncapped" usage between 22h00 and 06h00 except p2p or otherwise make it 10% of the bundle price between 22h00 and 06h00 with no restrictions on the protocols.

Sounds pretty reasonable.

Vodacom is 50% owned by Telkom if I'm not mistaken... figures...

I would say that it is an incorrect assumption to make that 22h00 - 06h00 is off-peak. Data will not have the same usage profile as voice. By effectively giving free internet access between 22h00 - 06h00 the 3G network would be unusable and you might as well dial-up. There is not uncapped ADSL after hours usage and ADSL does not have limited bandwidth on a radio network.

Current usage stats show the network runs flatout till about 1am (probably ic... :)). It then picks up around 6am again.

I've proposed some structure to encourage usage during this time and solicited feedback in another thread.
