You can indeed – but this is not a pure web based VoIP service. It is a true replacement for Telkom's voice offerings with your own local phone number to receive calls with direct interconnects to all the major operators. A bit different from Skype and other Internet based messaging services (which will not work on local-only accounts).

I am not defending any company or service here, but it is definitely not fair to compare Vox’s offering with Skype or Yahoo messenger. Very different type of service…

True, but no matter what the service in SA telkom controls all.so in the end you still going to pay

Vox is sooo coool. :)

Nice work guys. Under tough conditions too...

I already have a local number - its mandatory with all ADSL lines. If Vox could convince telkom to provide a data only ADSL option then I'd get excited. :)

Its got to be said that Vox is making progress into the right direction ;)
*Two thumbs way up!*

They're certainly creating (or trying their damndenst to make) a ripple in our little telecoms market.

Yes, there is Skype, etc - but this is a local service, for all calls, not purely VOIP - which may seem trivial, because of the line rental we're still coughing up.
But at least it can be said that someone is dipping their feet into Telscum's pond.

All thats left now boys is get fat (or get your friends) and dive into this Motherfunker and let this (cess)pool overflow with price reductions.

About time Vox caught up with the rest of the industry, now they must just figure out charging a monthly service/line fee (on top of call charges) is not terribly competitive in the VoIP space.

Not 100%, but when will iBurst allow those with iCall/Webfone™ receive calls?
I attended a presentation on exactly this late last year. The systems are in place - they are just busy with testing so I think you can expect it soon. Next 3 to 6 months would be my guess.

Please point me to a local VoIP provider that is issuing 087 numbers and not charging a monthly fee?

I believe Tellfree, Mweb, OpenVoice to name a few, even speculation Neotel wont either (for their number ranges). Sure most local providers offer monthly subscription packages for bundled minutes or other features, but not for the number itself (i.e. pure line/connection rental with no other benefit).

Just think R49 p/m for essentially nothing is a bit steep.

Am I correct in assuming that before I pay for this service I would still need to purchase, Telkom Line Rental, Telkom DSL Line Rental,Internet Cap before I could start considering their product? Seems like a steep price barrier to use their service.
Also this article says cellphone users can call these numbers with their free minutes, but what about Vox users calling cellphones. If these rates are the normal exorbitant rates id rather stick with my current setup, use telkom for free landline calls and use my cellphones free minutes to call cell numbers.
Because of the interconnect agreements with the cell companies this seems to be more of a glorified voip service. A proper alternative would allow me to get rid of Telkom completely (Like the one Neotel has been proposing)

No - I have been using Telfree for a number of months and they have a monthly charge. They do have a package with no monthly charge but the call costs are considerably more.

Not necessarily. I have been using VoIP services over wireless broadband for a long time and have been very happy with the results. Vox over wireless is not officially supported right now but it will work.

The rates to cellphones from most of the VoIP providers are comparable to the Telkom->Cell rates in most cases and some are slightly cheaper.

I know this could be useful for some people, but as long as I have to pay for Telkom anologue line rental, I'm not seeing any benefit. Especially since there's a R 50 monthly fee.

Are they targeting medium and large companies or individuals and smme's?

This may be the beginning of the end for Vox, which is 80% dependent on voice revenues for its survival. One of the cardinal rules of being a challenger to dominant players like Telkom is not to start a price war you cannot survive.

Although business customers will benefit in the short term, any benefit will evaporate when Vox is unable to continue to operate on its current margins. Whilst Vox is still small compared to the market, and poses no threat, it will be ignored. As soon as it actually makes a real difference, it will get a reaction. This may put it out of business, but it will probably benefit users in the end. Don't sign any long term contracts...

I agree. I do however think Vox is sooo cool! If they sent me a T-shirt in my size I'd wear it very often! :)

Hint!

Yeah. Although I'm usually offended by MyADSL's penchant for whoring itself to every word offered up by VOX and their marketing department, this time round there is actually a nice service in the offering:
Vox Telecom has concluded interconnection agreements with all major operators, including Telkom, MTN, Vodacom and Cell C. This means that Vox ADSL Phone subscribers can receive calls from all major operators.

Good news for cellular users is that the mobile operators are classifying the calls from their networks to Vox’s 087 numbers as ‘other network’ which means that free minutes apply to these calls.
Hope it lasts.
