Vox Telecom Fatpipe

Out of interest, what is the theoretical fastest ping to the UK given the limitations of physics?
If you ran a fibre optic cable in the shortest path (as the crow flies) directly from Cape Town to London then I calculate it would take 64 miliseconds to receive a ping response from the computer on the other side if that computer could have responded instantaneously. I could be wrong as I'm no expert.

Have to say I'm not impressed so far with the Vox customer support system. Submitted a ticket at 11am and I'm still waiting for a human being to get back to me :(

That and the chat support thing just times out.

Torrents are mega-slow this afternoon.
I'm getting intermittent drops in speed with latency measured in seconds instead of milliseconds. Haven't managed to get an answer as to whether it is a Telkom or a Vox issue. This has been going on since start of November. Sunday afternoon I had 0.07mbps upload on a 20mbps line. Crazy.

I'm thinking I'm going to get a small test account with another ISP so I can at least figure out where the fault lies myself. Will be quicker.

I've finished the import of the missing data. If you believe that you are still missing data, contact support (http://www.voxtelecom.co.za/support) -- please note that the Carry Over data won't be updated until later in the day (this is display only, the back end has been corrected)

EDIT: Carry Over has been updated on the front ends. (3pm)

All carried over data correct now...
Thankyou Cvanwie and all involved....

You could argue that we're already seeing pretty much the lowest possible latency between ourselves and the UK (Latency from CPT to LON over WACS is roughly 138ms). Remember that latency is measured round-trip, so even if the theoretical 'speed of light' between SA and the UK is 64ms, you'd need to double that figure to get the actual ping response time, because in order for your PC to measure the latency, it needs to first receive the "PONG" reply from the destination server, for the "PING" you sent out

Hi Porchrat. Please pm me you support reference number. I will get it to management level.

Hi Porchrat. Could you also send me a trace. We can have a look and see if there are any underlying issues.

Sorry if not clear by stating the "response" will take 64ms but it does actually include the return trip. 32ms for a single trip over 9669.6km @ speed of light which is 299,792.458km/s

Hi Voxy.

Thanks for the response. Much appreciated.

The problem is intermittent so I can't show you one from right now that will demonstrate what I'm talking about. I have one from the 7th of this month that I took while it was going on though which should give you an idea of what I'm talking about. I just ran a tracert to Google.

The blacked out .co.za hops are all within my network. I'm not sure this is a Vox issue as the high pings start on the first hop out of the network which I imagine is a Telkom exchange. I'm not really sure though.

I've reset ports with Vox but the lady at the support cell centre line said I should do it with Telkom as well which I did. Slow speeds still seem to happen most nights though. This latency is accompanied by a drop in speed. I'll get maybe 3mbps down and 0.0x up that is if I can get the speedtest sites to load at all.

I put it in the thread because I can't seem to figure out how to upload images via private message. If you wish to discuss it via PM I'm fine with that. :o

What line speed are you on?

Maybe put up a screen shot of your torrent where it's slow can see what speeds to you getting?

OK my line has gone to pot again tonight. Tried some Plugg details in the router and bam problem solved. Definitely looks like it is a Vox issue.

Well at least now I know who to talk to about this.
