VoxTelecom delivers GSM-based call centre

The call centre uses Vodacom's 3G product, and is said to be entirely independent of Telkom

That can only be good:)

huh.... first.....

Actually the call center I work in cut all Telkom lines in January 2006.

We have been dialing over GSM ever since. We have done some VOIP experementation but none of the providers really brought home the goods.

O well so it goes sometimes I spose.

Also we are don't want to be independant from Telkom but we were forced to be and have been ever since.

Interesting but confusing. If they are calling outbound into SA, what they are doing does not make sense, as it *sounds* like they are using VOIP to carry the traffic to another location from where they must break out to the normal networks. Why not just route voice straight over the links - it will cost less to Vodacom MTN and Cell-C, though maybe not to landlines, as you do not have to pay for the VOIP traffic before breaking out to these networks? Probably cheaper to do this for national landlines only, but a bit of haggling with V,M&C and one of them will give you a good rate into Telkom's landlines nationally.

Or do I misunderstand?

I agree with Taranchio - the call centre I am involved with dials all SA numbers over the GSM networks and has done for a while. We do keep some Telkom links for redundancy though.

Hmmm maybe they are just the first to use 3G/HSDPA for VOIP? a couple of radio links have been used in the past but I spose this is a first. I wonder what sort of deel they have for the data usage, also how do they keep it stable for the VOIP.

Making a sale on a line that behaves like Skype over Sentech would be pretty chalenging.

I find it difficult, although HSDPA/3G offers the required bandwidth, I wonder how they keep their latency down, 3G latency sits at well over 1200ms at the best of times. nothing like having a 1.2 second delay on your line. Also Vox is a subsidery of DataPro, im surprised they didnt try and impliment some sort of ADSL? Less latency, also possibly could of cost less.
