VPN: Is it necessary?

Ok, after having been bombarded with VNP ads I have decided to consider it. Trouble is, I don't really see a need for it (except for maybe work) or am I blinkered or naive? Yes, I do torrent and usenet from my Synology. For those that route their traffic via a VPN, what has been your experience and would you recommend it? Would you say it has added any value to your life?

Strongly recommend not trying to bypass your company IT security policies by using a VPN

Agree. Like if you are in hospital and you want to stream DSTV Now or Netflix... do not use a VPN to bypass the firewall on the “free WiFi”
