Hi there!

I have recently embarked on a mission to setup a VPN network between my main pc and any pc when in the field. Using a Huawei 3g card as the internet interface I have created a new user account with the relevant admin rights and setting the workgroup name. Because of the modem the ip addie is dynamic I therefore use Dynsite to have a point of reference to my main pc. I dropped the firewall on the connection for the time being and made sure port 1701 UDP and 1723 TCP is indeed open. I have also made sure the pc's connection ip is in the same group.

Problem: I still receive a Error 800. When I ping or tracert the ip I receive a time out from any another pc either 3G or ADSL. I have spoken to Vodacom requesting them to open all parts on my connection, which they claim they did, but still have no success. Common knowledge tells me I should have been able to ping the pc but no I can not. When I do the exact same setup on an internal LAN I have no problems connecting.

Some suggestions and pointers will really help.

How do the main PC (the ony that will accept the VPN connection) connect to the internet? If via 3G, it must be on the unrestricted apn.

In the field, which apn are you using?

Hi there!

Thanks for the quick response.

The main pc connects to the internet via a Huawei E620 pcmcia modem. The apn is "internetVPN". The current ip is 196.46.170.220 or teebos.dyndns.org

OK, won't work that way. You need the unrestricted apn. Internetvpn apn won't allow incoming connections.

mmm, what do you need from me so that i can this activated?

I have read through older posts and I am prepared to accept the risk of open ports on the server.

Done that about a week ago. I have asked them to open up all ports on the specified number.

Then you need to change your profile to connect to the unrestricted APN as opposed to the internetvpn. i.e. replace internetvpn with unrestricted

What is the correct apn string for the unrestricted apn?

unrestricted

The three APNs are as follows:
1) 'internet' - NATed, firewalled
2) 'internetvpn' - Routable, firewalled
3) 'unrestricted' - Routable, open incoming ports

It worked for about 10 minutes, just enough for me to see the light in the tunnel and connect via a test VPN.

Now for or another funny can't I connect to the 41.*.*.* Only to the 196.46.*.* and 10.*.*.*. ip's
I believe it is due to my modem but I have changed all the apn's, internet, interVPN and unrestricted.

Back to the drawing board......

Btw, thank you for your help.

If you can expand a bit on exactly what (and how) you have connected to your PC (is it ADSL or 3G as well?) we might be able to help you further. Is the VPN server running on the PC (i assume)?

Edit: I have reread your first post. So if I understand this you have a PC with a 3G connection, running at VPN service you want to connect to from other remote machines, yes? If you can connect to the unrestricted APN, try connecting to the VPN from an ADSL line, I recall there was some issue with routing between APNs recently, so you may find that the 3G device you are connecting from also needs to be on unrestricted, so testing from a ADSL line will at least let eliminate that from the equation.

Ok first question first:

1. Lacking a Adsl line i have connected 3G via another PC with a Huwei modem to this pc using it as the server. I have also a 2nd GPRS connection from a guy in Nelspruit who connects to my pc. Both pc's could connect for a couple of minutes before my connection disconnected by itself. I could pinged the server form both connections.

I am using XP's own VPN Server but if i have a just hint of doubt I will change it to something else. Is there a way that I can privately pass you my data simcard mobile number so you can check if every thing is in order on your side?

I can test your VPN connection if you like (I use 3G at home and ADSL at work), just PM (Private Message) me the details with a temp account.

If you want your number checked out you will have to speak to 155 or @v3g

mmm the 155 number. Ok lets take it for granted that the sim number is in order.

I get an error 628 now. Consistently.APN is "unrestricted" no spelling mistakes- I have checked that. I have also created new profiles in mobile partner and VMC making sure the modem has accepted the settings.

Not familiar with that error message, sorry. Does internet or internetvpn still connect?

Yes, to the internet but i am back to square one with the VPN-can't be pinged.

If that still works then I would suggest pursuing the error connecting to the unrestricted apn with 155 or waiting for one of the other forumites to post some suggestions.

Edit: PS please update your location info as that helps locating area specific issues.
