Hi
New to the forum. But if answers and opinions be sought. This be the place. Would like as many responses as possible. What have your dealings with VSAT been like here. Operators? Costs? Performance? With Avanti having launched its HYLAS satellites for MEA, it could become a real alternative again. Your thoughts suggestions and gripes.

Welcome!

Are you talking only data over VSAT or voice and data. From my experience if you need quality voice over VSAT I'm sad to say Telkom is you best option. If it's only data, all the big player are about on par with each other. They do voice but I still need to find someone that is happy with the quality.

Agreed - Telkom do voice over VSAT very well.

But keep in mind that with data you have horrible 2000ms+ lag, which is not good for bandwidth-intensive applications.

Have four sites which still is making use of voice over VSAT. We switched them over to 3G for data/internet connectivity as the lag is interfering with business.

Landlines got stolen a lot, that's the reason why they're using VSAT and 3G.

True. 2000ms is absolute rubbish. Should be around 500 to 700ms. Max. But it is also a major accidental possibility that helkoms voip service is prioritised. I mean it doesn't take much to do that. Also in saying that the level of skilled IT professionals these days are hard to come by. Almost no middle ground. Absolute morons or genius individuals. Off topic though :/ Had a quick sqwizz at prices and vsat ops at about 128kb max for telkom. Up and Down. My concern here is i want to know why anyone actually doesn't consider vsat as a major African player in telecoms?! Who has given it this bad name? Is it service? Price? I'm fact finding here gents (and possibly ladies) i believe in vsat. But people are either oblivious or outraged.

Have had a Vodacom VSat link for internet nearly a year now, for home office use. A 1024/256kbps link and I consistently get sub 600m.s response.

Have not had a single outage yet, but the speed is not sufficient for YouTube not to buffer.
R465/month VAT included for 5GB. It was a special that included free hardware and installation on a 24month contract. I have zero cell signal and my closest ADSL DSLAM is 15km away with steel wires for the Helkom phone lines (the occasional cut occurs, but never stolen.)

I'm considering a VoIP channel as well, but wish to do a PoC before I sign.

Oh, and I not been able to get any torrents to work of the VSat...

Hi there

Agree that the 2000ms Ping time or latency is not good. It should be between at least 650 ms and 800ms.
You can contact me- we are a large VSAT provider in SA and we do not do any daily limits, CAPS or FAPS as some of the other players
