Vumatel boundary wall box

So here are a couple questions for those in the know. Not sure if I'm asking in the right place.

With regards to the vumatel boundary wall box:

What are the two connections inside for? I see my fibre line is only connected to one of the connectors inside the box. What is the other one for? And what happens if you swapped your connection to the other one?

Thanks in advance for anyone who can answer!

The 2 fibres are spliced through to the street cabinet. A single fibre is patched on to the backhaul to the POP. So this means only a single one of those fibres is active at any time. If there's a line issue, technicians can first check levels on both fibres (and swap if necessary).

Vumatel uses a single fibre BiDirectional system. So only one fibre is needed. But it's cheaper to install and splice to fibres during build than repair at a later stage.

If you swap, you won't get light.

If you swapped it, my guess is you wont have internet.

Interesting! Thanks for the informative post!

So one other question then: the little green "joiner" that joins the fibre from the street to the line going to the CPE has space for you to make two joins, but only one side is used. Is this also just a redundancy thing? Wouldn't matter which side of it you used to join your cable? Or does each side serve a different purpose and you only use the correct one?

Not a problem at all. The green (LC/APC) joiner is called a mid-coupler. With LC (the small square connector), they generally come in duplex (two connectors) instead of simplex. They're cheap (Pricing ranges from R7 - R25 for brand names). Also, that slot it slides into is a standardised size (simplex mid-coupler would just fall out). Finally, it provides a good home for the unused spliced pigtail (the green connector on the second fibre). So it's all for redundancy, ease of maintenance and also ease of ordering.

The mid-coupler is a straight pass-through for two connectors, so the side with the lit fibre will allow a connection through it. The other side won't give you any light unless it's patched back at the street cabinet.

Awesome, thanks a lot! My second fibre is just dangling around in the box loose and dusty, so it'll probably be a good idea then like you say to stash it in the unused side of the mid coupler then? I imagine all the dust cant be good for it!

Thanks again for your posts, great stuff!
