Vumatel install cost (1700), why???

They do the install at a loss, the CPE itself costs over R1000 now add the fibre cable labour and splicing you quickly get to R1700.00, an ADSL line was just a repatch at the DSLAM.

To be fair they did zero splicing on my install ;) But yeah. I consider it good value.

They didn't splice my installation. The CPE location I indicated was about 30-40m from the boundary wall. The installers only had a 150m roll of fibre, so most of that roll is still on the reel in my roof.

Same here
Yeah so they use a ruggedized lc lc drop lead, which is why it's at a fixed length but they need to splice an lc connector to the fibre at the wall box at street level. They then connect with a coupler to the drop lead. On the older installs they would run a UV tube then pull the fibre through and splice a tail to the internal end then direct splice at street level :).
