Vumatel Price change

There was a speed problem this AM. Mine went back to 20/20 for a while but, after ONT restart, came up to 50/50 again.

Man I was going to ask you to update, but thought it was too early. Looking for a new service provider.
Can I ask why you want to leave MTS ? Reason being I was thinking of switching to them

I detailed it in the Mind the Speed ISP thread. Last week being really bad, I dont get the promised 70/70 let alone the 50/50, struggling to open websites, streaming services is buffering.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realise that there was a thread for MTS; will go check.

It does seem to me it's an FNO issue not sure if i mentioned on this thread or the other one I have 2 accounts at 2 different addresses 1 runs perfectly the other not so much (this was June so far July both accounts no issue)
Yes, I did see your comments.

That said, they also seem to suffer from the malady common to most ISPs: they don't keep their customers updated, and when they do it's via email.

Which, if the fibre (that carries my email) is down, is pretty pointless <sigh>

Finally got the notification of the price change from Mweb:

Hi,

We have some good news. The upload speed of your current Fibre product will be increasing AND you’ll receive a price decrease.

The changes will be made during July and will be effective by 1 August 2021.

Your new product details are as follows:

Account number:xxxxxxxxx
New product: Uncapped 50/50Mbps Fibre Line - Vumatel
New Price effective 1 August: R899 pm

This change will be effective by 1 August 2021 and new prices will automatically be applied to your next bill.

nothing has changed yet... but will relook at pricing to see if its worth upgrading\downgrading

From what I can see there's more happy than unhappy clients.. I for one am a very happy client.. I've had great service from day one..

Unrelated but what would be your preferred way to get contacted regarding things like this? We are sticking with WhatsApp, Discord notices, but curious what else is out there and where people want notices to be.

When my fibre - and, therefore, my Internet connection - is down, a non-Internet mechanism is preferred.

MTN was having rare mail server problems last week, so they sent several SMS messages over the following days, advising of their progress in resolving the issue. Please note the emphasis on the word "several"; the communications were on-going until the issue was resolved.

SMSing is perhaps a tad "old-fashioned", but simple and pretty much guaranteed to work.

I don't subscribe to Discord / Facebook / Twitter / LinkedIn, and my WhatsApp account will - thanks to their latest fiasco - no doubt be suspended / deleted in time, due to my refusal to accept their latest terms-and-conditions.

I will no doubt be accused of being a Luddite, and am quite happy to agree :) OTOH, having retired with 40+ years in the IT industry - I opened my "Internet" banking account in 1985 - there is reason in my madness :):)

If the responsiveness of their sales support team is anything to go by, thus far I agree: I am averaging less than ten minutes to receive a reply to my emails

Awesome thanks for the information! Been thinking of ways to notify our users and so far all the enthusiast users will be on mybroadband, Discord, and WhatsApp, Twitter, etc...

We are going to look at implementing SMS's anyway regarding outages as you said, its old school but it works as you said. Our biggest thing is it will have to be opt-in as we don't want to spam our users on every platform, so they can choose which one to be notified on. Also keeping all the POPIA ducks in order.

Yup, I don't envy you your task :)

That said, does POPIA apply to technical (i.e. non-marketing) SMS's to customers ? I wouldn't have thought so ...

You would think so, but every contact made with a customer would need to be POPIA compliant.

Even if you are contacting them regarding an order, update, and such. But generally, the client opted in when they placed an order or have a service. Just making 100% sure there won't be any issues with POPIA (even though it's been relevant for years).

This also just helps us keep our clients happy and double check that they want to receive updates on outages and network changes etc...

Just had a quick read through this thread again. Haven't followed it much lately. I have been battling with Webafrica (once again) to get my Vumatel line speed upgrade. On Webafrica portal etc it shows my account is 20/5 (i used to have a 10/1mb). With the free speed upgrade my package was bumped up. Now when I do a speed test i still get 10/1mb (same speed as before the speed upgrades). I have turned off my ont and router every single day. Left off for up to 30 min but still the same result. I spoke to the WebAfrica on Monday and they assured me was upgraded. So checked again and still not.

Contacted them again today (2 hours later). And was told it is already at 20/5mb. I showed them the speedtest from the night before (speedtest app from Android). And it sits constant at 10mb and around 1.5mb to 2mb. But apparently I am doing the speedtest wrong and it is actually 20mb. All other devices are off and only my cellphone is connected to the router. So am I dumb? I have been in the IT industry for the last 20+ years. If I did a speed test and got like 15mb, then yes maybe. But it sits constant at 10 and can see it gets throttled there (as on still a 10mb package).

I actually dont know what to do with these guys anymore. Still one of the most useless providers I have ever dealt with in my life and cant wait to move away from them.

I know I sound like a stuck record, and no I don't earn commission, but come to Afrihost. They're great.

My current ISP has finally confirmed (under much duress :) ) that the move from an asymmetrical 50/5 Mbps to a symmetrical 50/50 Mbps is as much as I can expect from the Vumatel price changes.

Further discussion led to their stating that their network is superior to many others.

Which, in turn, made me wonder as to just how much an ISP can influence the technical aspects (e.g. dropped connections, speed etc.) of a network that is run by others i.e the FNO ?

Can anyone - especially the company reps - provide an answer ?
