Just an update.

The Vuma installation guys (not the guys that did the installation this morning) stopped at my house I chatted to them. They confirmed that the line was lighted up. Still no orange light on the CPE.
The guy came in to have a look and he found that the original installers had used the wrong SFP module. So he fetched the correct one from the car, plugged it in and Bob's your uncle, orange light.
I plugged in my Cool Ideas router, phoned them up and I am now live and posting from my new fibre connection!

For reference, the SFP that goes in the CPE is blue and NOT yellow.

Getting a consistent 21/2 with 1-2ms ping. Very happy.

Awesome news :) Yeah so they used the wrong bidirectional, not sure how that would happen as it should be boxed up in the CPE.

It sems my Vuma install was non standard then. They came at around 9 AM and installed the fiber between the house and the box on the wall outside. but the pre-terminated fiber was too long, so they had to cut it when putting the fiber through the wall. They told me that, within the next 30 minutes, someone would come to splice the wallbox. So I stood and waited and sure enough, 20 mins later, the guy splicing the wallbox arrived.

But he told me that he would have to go to the aggregation point and connect the other side of the fiber, which would happen later that day as they go round and splice all the wall boxes in one go and then patch them in at the aggregation point all at the same time. He promised to drive by and let me know when the line was completely connected and that it would be later the same day.

At around 17:30, just as I was giving up hope, he drve by and said everything was live. About 20 minutes after that, I'd signed with Cool Ideas and my 100/100 connection was live.

By the time I saw the box the CPE came in, it was already open. So I'm not sure when it was opened and how the wrong SFP module got in there.

Well, the fibre they used on my install was also too long, but the installer just shrugged and left the excess on the roll in the roof. TBH, I think it actually costs less to just leave the extra fibre than to send an additional technician and have him spend time (which is money) to splice the fibre. Plus every additional interface (like the splice) adds a possible point of failure.

But glad you are up and running. Maybe in the not too distant future I can also experience a 100/100 connection.

Do what I did. Last year Sept/Oct I printed a ton of leaflets at the local print shop and dropped it in everyone's post boxes to tell everyone to show their interest in Vumatel Fibre. Our area is about to go live in about a week or two. :) We also spread the message through our neighborhood's closed Facebook group.

This I will do. Will take me a few evenings but I'll canvas the whole damn neighborhood.
