It's time to get rid of my 2004 polo and because i have a good relationship with the VW mechanic and my polo has treated me well i'd like to get a golf 7 or an A1. They're both expensive so i'm looking at getting a demo.

the golf's a bit big but seems to give more for the money.

The new car has to last me 10 years.

i'd love to hear your thoughts.

The Golf is a step up from the A1 so it's the obvious choice...

tbh, i dont the you should be looking at the A1. In my opinion the equivalent competitor would be the A3. I see the A1 more as a upmarket polo competitor

The A3 shares platform with the Golf. Similar story with the Polo and the A1.

I'd take the golf but its a pity its so boring.

Definitely the Golf - A1 is a great car, but it's pretty small inside. If you want to drive it for 10 years get something more practical.

P.s. forgot about that monza. I'm sure somebody's snapped it up by now.

I'm a girl :-)

Bit worried about the golf being too big which is why i considered the Audi. The cheapest Audi is R226 and the radio doesn't even have bluetooth or USB - it's irritating that the better radio's an optional extra. The golf i'm looking at is about R240 new. Hoping to pay a bit less for a demo.

Audi say there's a price increase of 3.2% on the A1 in early february so if you're looking at one best check them out now.

Golf. The A1 is a fancy polo and nowhere near the golf. Test drive both and you'll see.

Btw, I assume you're looking at the 1.2 Trendline golf? If possible, look for a 1.4 Comfortline demo instead, and if you see a DSG available close to your limit then go for that. You won't be disappointed.

Yes, the A3 is too expensive. Interesting that you mention the DSG. I've heard about it. Is it that fancy control on the steering wheel?

The DSG is the automatic gearbox used by the VW group, available on Audi as the S-Tronic, Porsche as the PDK etc. Similar design is used by competing brands like Merc and BMW.

The DSG does have (fine) :rolleyes:paddles:rolleyes: behind the steering wheel that you can use to change gears manually, but also runs normally in either D (Drive) or in S (Sport) mode. Reason I recommend it is that it really makes the car very reactive, faster and also improves fuel use. While the acceleration might not be the most important thing to you, the fuel saving I'm sure anyone can appreciate.

EDIT: I would really recommend you call up your nearest dealership and request to test drive both the manual and the DSG, explanations and videos really do not give the same understanding as actually driving the car does.

My brother in-law spoke about DSG but without knowing what debeer165 explained i didn't take much notice. Tks debeer.
Std price of 1.4 TSI comfortline SEVEN SPEED!!!! DSG is R293. I'll really have to twist that mechanic's arm :-)

The 1.4 TSI is gorgeous to drive i need to try the DSG over the weekend.

Oh, and thanks to you guys i'll go for the golf 7.
