VW golf 7 or Audi A1

Whhooooeeeee that's a smoooth ride. 220 on the .... autobahn??? I'm guessing.

My brother in-law spoke about DSG but without knowing what debeer165 explained i didn't take much notice. Tks debeer.
Std price of 1.4 TSI comfortline SEVEN SPEED!!!! DSG is R293. I'll really have to twist that mechanic's arm :-)

The 1.4 TSI is gorgeous to drive i need to try the DSG over the weekend.

Oh, and thanks to you guys i'll go for the golf 7.

Good choice. The one I'd choose, as well. The 1.4TSi's are great engines, and if you can get a DSG for a reasonable price then it's definitely worth it. Wonderful boxes.

 Problem? She asked a question relating to the steering wheel buttons, and I pointed out that the only obvious change the DSG brings to the steering wheel are the flappy paddles behind it which are used for gear changes. If your issue is with the use of the term flaps, then feel free to substitute paddles, knobs, switches, back-and-forth thingamabobs or flippity floops at your leisure.

Flippety floops... haha! :D

Yes, the A3 is too expensive. Interesting that you mention the DSG. I've heard about it. Is it that fancy control on the steering wheel?

Why not get a Polo 1.6TDI Comfortline? It will hold it's resale value for much longer than the A1... not that you wan't to sell any time soon.

We have a few A1's at work as company vehicles, and they aren't great at all. The A3 is a different story, but that's Golf territory.

Thanks genetic, don't you think the polo's is overpriced?

also after driving one for 10 years it would be nice to have a change. My current car is a 2004 1.6 comfortline and hasn't given any trouble and hearing that your A1 models aren't great confirms that golf is the way to go.

I wonder why the A1, once you put a decent radio and a fews odds and ends in it costs the same price as the new golf

IF i can squeeze the extra cash from my budget golf 7 DSG is first choice, otherwise without DSG.

Go for the golf 1,4tsi highline it has enough power if I remember correctly it's 118kw and It's very light on fuel so perfect for daily use...... Whatever you do DONT go for the DSG box especially if you want to keep the car for 10 years as if the box goes, and they do, then it will set you back well over R50k which isn't going to be pleasant out of motorplan! I know the box is great and is an engineering marvel but i would only recommend it for people selling the car before motorplan runs out.

You should maybe look at some other fine German auto-mobiles like the Mercedes A-Class and BMW 1-series. The current range of Astra J models are also a cut above the default choice.

:erm: A basic BMW 116i starts is around R300k while an A200 is is closer to R350k new. Demo's won't be that much cheaper. Not quite what she's looking for I'm sure.

Okay, I expected an Astra recommendation from you Roux, that's still applicable here. The BMW and A-Class are not though, as these are even more overpriced than the A3 and more scarcely equipped, the Merc especially so. For example, I've compared the A250 against the new GTI, and getting the merc up to the same spec level needed so many optional extras that it ended up at 480 thousand...

She'd already have to stretch her budget for the DSG, and the highline is another 15k more than that even. While the extra power is nice it isn't worth it to me, and the one or two other changes (wheels, interior trim etc) also don't make the highline worth the cost in my opinion, the comfort level is a happy medium. True, the boxes have given some problems later on in their life, but with proper maintenance (and a little luck) it should hold for 10 years without too much trouble, nobody I personally know has had problems with their older boxes even.

Luxury brand, truly the largest reason for the pricing.

Thing is, with an A-class or 1-series that last thing on your mind should be getting it on the same "level" as a GTI. Hell even a R32 is irrelevant here because it is not a Mercedes-Benz or BMW which just is better.

Hatches are still nothing remarkable, everyone has one meaning they're all boring. Getting a coupe means dabbling in the 2nd market because its not going to fall in her budget. Let her get a car that she's going to like, even if it is boring to you.

Brand loyalty is strong with this one. But no, I do not consider paying 100 000 more for the same basic car just to get a badge worth it. If I'm really that desperate to drive a Merc I'll get the GTI and have a merc badge put in afterwards and save a lot of money. Would still go faster than an A250 anyway even with the new badging.:D

I guess since she is coming from a Polo the extra power wont be essential but its nice to have when you need to climb a hill or overtake. Then again I checked the website and the highline has 103kw and comes in at R317k compared to the comfortline at R286k so thats a whopping R31k for slighlty bigger wheels a 0.8 inch bigger touchscreen,13kw etc....so yeah doesn't seem worth it on second thoughts she should rather stick to the comfortline and add things like park distance control ...

As for the DSG lol you sound like a gambler:p.I have heard of a few people having to replace DSG box and they were not happy at all.I still say if she is going to use it for 10 years or well out of warranty then she shouldn't take it as the Payout is very high if DSG box fails. But who knows maybe by that time they will be so mainstream that replacement could be priced better.Thats a gamble she'll have to take for herself depending how much she likes the DSG box.

Yep the choice comes down to whether she feels the DSG is worth it after driving it around herself. On the power note though, I've done many tests of the 1.4 in different circumstances, one of which involved a very VERY steep incline going both ways. The car managed to comfortably pick up speed without issues, and I'm talking about doing 60 in 4th gear on a sharp incline without issues, that low down turbo and torque really does it's job well I must say.

But yes, I am a bit of a gambler, but at the crux of the matter I am forced to buy an automatic for my next car for various reasons, and the DSG seems the best option. Luckily it's the golf and should have parts widely available as a result of popularity as well.

I went from a Polo 1.6 Petrol (2011) to an Audi A1 this year. I looked at the Golf 7 but it was boring. Much prefer the Audi A1! If I'm not mistaken the golf only comes with 3 year warranty and 60000km whereas the Audi A1 comes with 5 year 100 000km (correct me if I'm wrong.) But the gold has better resale value.

Phew..Luckily you didn't go for the monza ...now it's all mine!
