VW Golf 7 Replacement

Which 1.4TSI though? If it's the twin-charged motor, could you be picking up on the supercharger's whine on pull-off?

The issues you've experienced with DSGs are peculiar. Most all initial niggles have been sorted over the decade since introduction. They're pretty damn reliable in their current guise...

To quote VW: The audible noise referred to is normal operational noises emitted by the turbo while spooling up.

Well, compressors whine, be it turbo- or supercharger. A turbo's impeller spins up to 150,000+ rpm... you will hear it.

So, is your current car's DSG acting up too, or is it just this whine that has you concerned?

Friend swears Audi is the best car make in the world. Driving his 4th A3

EcoSport. Add a roof rack + storage and a towbar and you will have enough space. The boot is bigger than you expect. What it lacks in depth, it makes up in height. Also. Seats can fold down completely. Bad part. There is a 3-4 month waiting list for the car

I am aware that the we should be hearing the turbo, issue is that the noise we refer to only occurs when there is additional strain on the car. Specifically when pulling away on an incline for example and continues through "gears"1-3 then goes away. This does not occur when you pull away on a level surface even if you floor it.

Can get one by 22 November from a local dealership, bootspace is the only concern there for day to day use. Will be going back this weekend with the pram to see how it fits in.

Could still be the turbo. The harder you step on the gas, the more exhaust gasses turning the turbo. Turbo spinning is a soothing sound though - not one that should be alarming. :)

After all that I too wouldn't want to touch a VW or Audi.

BMW.

If it is a twin-charged motor, the supercharger's engagement is dynamic and load-dependent between 2,500 rpm and 3,500 rpm. I'm just thinking out loud here; production defects definitely do happen, but the odds of getting two Monday cars in succession would be monumental.

Also, the EcoSport looks like a tekkie on stilts. :p

Would agree except for the fact that it doesn't happen on a level surface, even if you switch over to sport and floor it.

Agreed on the tekkie.

You'd be building momentum more slowly when going uphill, so the engine's management system might be keeping the supercharger engaged for longer to compensate for the turbo being slow to spool up. It's a bloody complex system - you might find this interesting - it doesn't quite follow the principle of both compressors doing all they can as long as you have the pedal mashed.

Even if yours is a turbo-only TSI, the noises coming from a variable geometry turbo will vary dependent on the load. I'm not saying I'm necessarily right, but you might just be chasing ghosts. And it's such a bloody nice car...

I don't think the EA211 1.4 TSI is twin charged. Single turbo.

This is what happens when you have nothing to do with a brand for 4 years, and then place too much faith in VWSA's 'trainers' on your return. :p You're right, EA211s are all turbo-only, but the gist would hold: there are more factors to take into account when trying to isolate the source of some nebulous whine.
