Hi,

To cut a long story short, wife bought a Golf 7 1.4 TSI DSG last year, clutch had to be replaced after 15,000km's and gearbox packed up after 25,000km's. VW replaced the vehicle with a new one which is going the same route after 8,000km's, VW says the engine is supposed to make the whining noises we hear on pull away but won't give it to us in writing that everything is fine with the car.

Decision is to now basically sell the Golf and replace it with something similar, currently instalment is about R3.8k and she should have a deposit available in the region of R70-90k.

Thus far she's looked at:
Ford EcoSport CVT, price is perfect, boot to small
Merc A200 CDI, price is too high and even if you do the agility agreement with a deposit the best it comes to is R5.5k pm. I also thought there was a 1.8 version of this car?
BMW 116i auto, waiting for a quote from the dealership currently, had a brilliant deal on this when the first VW packed up but had to let it go.
Ford Kuga, too expensive
Audi A3, thought about it, VW just left a bad taste though and its basically the same car

Any suggestion on what else to look at? Criteria would be similar tech to the golf in terms of comfort items (touch screen etc.), space for 2 kids and an instalment in the region of R3.5k after paying the deposit and no balloon.

Oh, and no French cars, been burned by Renault, Citroen and Peugeot previously.

I'm guessing used vehicles are out? Plenty of 1-2 year old cars in that price range. And is this on a 60 month term?
I would go look at the Civic hatch, ticks most of the boxes minus the touch screen iirc (but the vast amount of space on offer might make up for it)

I have an A3 Sedab DSG / S-Tronic without any issues. I understand that you have bad feelings about the group, but I just want to bring my good experience to attention as I've had zero issues with it.

Otherwise, I agree that the A-Class is too much cash for what it is worth. The BMW 1 Series is good, though I would recommend the 120d over the 116i if it is at all possible, since it has a great engine in.

I assume you need to have an auto?

If it was me, I'd go used, but its my wife we're talking about...term can be either 60 or 72, her car is basically a tax write off.

Sister in law also has the A3 without issues, the experience thus far with VW has just been disappointing.

Should have mentioned in the criteria that it has to be auto.

I've had a noise problem with my A3 since I purchased it last year, been through the run of the mill with even the turbo replaced and nothing fixed it. Audi SA just shrugging their shoulders about the whole thing. Otherwise car is great, but I wouldn't want to deal with VAG again in the future.

Completely understandable.

Like I said, 120d would be the pick of the litter from the 1-Series (if a 135i is out of the question anyway :D)
A Cooper could also work, as would an A1.

The new Polo also has most of the things that the Golf has but at a lower price. One would obviously go to another branch though.

If you are in Gauteng take the Golf to one of the Hatfield VW dealers and get their opinion on it.

Concerned about the resale value on the Volvo, brother in law has one and is struggling to get a decent trade value on it.

Considered A1 and Cooper, problem is the 2 kids criteria

Look at a tiguan too then, way more practical than the others mentioned and you can still get DSG etc.

if you going to keep it forever yes , remember the saying volvo for life.

the resale value is terrible.

That's actually a fallacy, especially on the newer Volvos.

I got the same as my stepbrothers Mercedes B Class on trade a few months back
