Is it possible to have the VW optional extras installed on a 2nd hand car or are they factory installed?
If not, is the only option to look at 3rd party equivalents?

I suppose it depends what those extras are? Dealers should be hesitant as the extras added when new are also covered by the car-warranty.

Maybe expand on which optional extras you are referring to.

Either way answer is nope, factory installed. Third party equivalents are your only option.

It is in the best interest of dealers to upsell buyers on extras on new vehicles.

Most likely its going to be a 3rd party option approved by VW.

Whoever is the first owner of that neglected their duties, it is expected that the first owner should put all the must haves on a new car for the next owner to enjoy free of charge. Drop this car and look for another one.

I initially thought VW (or any dealer for that matter) would install optional extras after the sale. But they do not. You can only get it from 3rd parties, and there is no affiliation to the dealer whatsoever.

I installed PDC and Radio with Camera, all 3rd party, VW only pointed me to a good installer, but thats it.

I looked at a GTI a few years back and the dealer ticked 'sunroof' and 'xenon' light by default.

He says no one will buy the car used without those and although they're not mandatory, they're highly highly recommended and that dealership won't let one go without those 2 options

If it's got a warranty still on it dont even think about installing ,modding or changing anything on the car. I could see a dealer using this as a get out of warranty work card.

I’d find another dealer.

I’d find another dealer.

Why?

I actually fully agree with him.

3 Years down the line when selling, I'm going to battle without those two options listed.

Agreed. My Polo had the pano roof and red leather. The roof alone added 20k in value to the trade in.

When looking to by my 2nd hand golf i only considered ones with sunroof and xenons. These are deal breakers for many on the used market

Because I’m the customer and I decide what I want, not the dealership.

I have no problem with you wanting the options, it’s your car and your money, you must but what you want. But I have a problem with a dealer forcing me to buy something that is an option.

As has been mentioned already, it depends entirely on what the optional extra's are, as some are just short of impossible to install ex factory. Anything that requires integration with the wiring harness will be a nightmare to retro fit and I would not suggest it be tried. When I bought my Golf a few years back I didn't want some of what I now have but looking back I am glad that it came fully spec'd.

I had a polo gti without xenons and no pano roof, infact it had Zero options..... bought for R235k as a demo, sold it 5 years later with 90000kms added, for R170k..... A well looked after car, with FSH and no smashes will sell. I also had another year left on Motorplan. that sells better than xenons.

Thanks, guys. You confirmed my suspicions.

I'm looking into the Jetta 1.4 TSI Comfortline (enough power for me, decent looks, lots of boot space, compared to other makes and models). The optional extras I'm interested in is the auto climate control (I like to keep cool), the PDC/rearview camera and the composition media. The xenon lights and keyless entry/start/stop will be nice, but not a deal breaker.

However, it seems like most of the sun-30k cars only have PDC, and composite media (probably the most common thing the salesmen could sell).

Yeah those xenons is must, the stock lights look crap.

Fair enough.

But I quite like the heads up on getting the extra value.

I don't even look at cars without sunroof or Xenons, so it makes selling that much harder in a sea of GTIs

That's because xenons comes standard on most cars in that segment. Only on a VW will it be an optional extra.

Actually the new thing is LEDs. When VW gets around to that, it will be an option too...
