Because we have a vehicle registry of all vehicles sold legally, who they were sold to and the owners contact details. So they know EXACTLY who owns a Polo. Same way they know who to send a speeding fine to.

They haven't specified the model because they know exactly which model and VIN, who owns it and sent the SMS to THOSE specific people. Your second line is EXACTLY what they have done.

The public don't have access to it. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Dealerships have tools that we do not.

You are being extremely paranoid.

seems fishy to me, maybe its my Tin foil hat time, but I cant understand why such a generalist SMS sent out,
if I got it, Id just delete it and move on with my life, we don't have a VIN search website in SA (unlike the yanks), so how many people are driving around with cars requiring Recalls?

Seriously? You buy a Polo from VW and you want to know how they would know if you own a Polo?
I think some things here were left unsaid (because I assume it would be common knowledge/sense). Only first owners are sent an SMS, I would assume. Even then, it's possible (like my wife did with her Q5) to update the particulars of the owner at the manufacturer, so they know which vin is linked to which 2nd owner (if this isn't already done automatically upon reregistration, I don't know).

There's also the fact that SMS (even today) generally have a 160 (or something to that effect) character limit. You can send longer SMS with more details, but why would you do that when 1 SMS conveying all the important details is more than adequate?

@EMAM It's the tow hook, so I wouldn't be too concerned right now. If the service is due shortly, maybe just have a chat with the dealership and ask them to have a look whether your son's Polo is indeed affected by the recall.

@eg2505 You really need to learn when it's time to stop digging. As I've posted on a few occasions.
