VW Polo problem with car stalling while driving

So is it possible for the fuel pump to stop pumping while driving? And then start pumping again when you start? If the fuel pump is finished doesn't it stop pumping completely?

Indeed. In my experience. This is a very basic pump that has a diaphragm and I think when it gets hot the material gets too stretched on the inside to work effectively, but once it has cooled a little it works again.

Disclaimer: This is the only think I can think off, because it has worked for me every time. When that has happened, I park it a while and it'll work soon after - enough to get me to a shop to buy a new petrol pump. This is not a scientific fact :)

Take it for a scan. R350 to find out the problem.
Sounds like fuel pump relay / breather blocked.

I am always told that its the pump. My worry is I drive about 200km fine then it just starts to drop the acceleration, I park for an hour and can again drive surely if its the pump is down should the car move again? I actually replaced my pump some 8 months ago. Can someone help? It normally happens in the heat.

Hi Mashie,

Did you ever get a response on your issue? I have similar issue - starting is a problem especially after driving in rush hour traffic. Recently there was a strong fuel smell, and today there is just no idle - after a bit it starts, drives for a kilometre or 2 and switches off when I stop.

Yip. It's the fuel pump. Exact symptoms I had had when I still had my Golf. The fuel pump isn't electric, it's a little mechanical diaphram pump, and when this sometimes happens when it gets hot. Let it cool down, and try again, but it will keep happening until you replace the pump. Costs between R300 - R600 depending on where and which model, but I found it really doesn't matter - it will happen again. Buy two, learn to change it, and keep the spare in the car with IIRC a 8mm allen key.

Thanks - I'll look into that.

Ironically, it's refusing to start today after towing home last night. Just turns but won't fire up. Hopefully it's just the pump as you say and it works with a new pump.

Yeah. Take the pipe off that leads from the pump to the engine, and turn it over, you'll see there is no fuel being pumped.

If you remove the bogi cord from a plug does it spark when you turn the ignition?

If not, it's the cambelt.

Hi all, i own a vw polo 1.6 2006 model. im sitting with the same problem. I then changed the fuel pump yet the problem persist. The fuel gauge is unstable and the car shuts off at random times. It takes 2 or 3 tries before starts. Please assist. Its a brand new fuel pump i bought. Thank you

It's not necessarily your fuel pump - that is also the sign of a Hall Sender packing up. Get your agent to check - you won't sort it out over the net or by yourself.

Was the fuel gauge erratic before the pump change? Because then it’s unrelated.

If it’s after the change I seem to recall it requires a software calibration. Unless the fuel pump wasn’t new and came with a dodgy fuel sender unit.

Yes the fuel gauge was unstable before, eventually the car never started at all. My mechanic replaced the coil pack which made the car drive again but we replaced the fuel pump with a new as well because it was making a weird noise. Now the car drives smooth but the fuel gauge is on empty and the car shuts down at random times.

As I said before, check the Hall sender unit.

Does the fuel gauge work when you start the car but then randomly drops to empty?

Then it’s more than likely not an actual fuel problem and just the sender unit and can be ignored for figuring out the rest of the issue.

Does your Polo use a coil pack or Individual coils? If the coils gave a problem before maybe check there again?

Hi,me too I'm having pretty the same problem since 6 months and any mechanic in my country knows what's wrong exactly, everytime when it's too hot,the car stop and need to wait 5 minutes to re start and when I do the full tank,it smell fuel for the next 150km... by the way it's a VW polo 6n1,please need help.

Sounds like a coil.
